The third annual Nation's Triathlon will take place Sunday,

new course that winds through Washington, DC's monumental
corridor in the shadow of some of the nation's best known
memorials and national treasures.
This Olympic distance triathlon includes a 1.5K swim in the
Potomac River, 40K bike course through downtown D.C., and a 10K
run along Washington, DC 's memorials and landmarks. The race
will take you by the White House, Lincoln Memorial, Washington
Monument, National Mall, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Navy
Memorial, Kennedy Center, Korean War Memorial, FBI Building,
National Archives, National Treasury, Holocaust Memorial, and
more! It is a thrilling experience!
According to Charles Brodsky, founder of the Nation's
Triathlon, "The Nation's Triathlon features one of the most
spectacular courses in the world. We designed the 2008 course
for The Nation's Triathlon to feature a flat, fast course with
a spacious transition area to accommodate our growing numbers
of triathletes. This exciting course offers everything: speed,
amazing scenery, historic landmarks, and a race experience that
can't be matched."
The 1.5K Swim: Swimmers enter upstream from the
transition via a floating pier and swim north, go under the
first truss of the Memorial Bridge, turn west, swim to the 5th
truss and turn left. They then swim downstream and exit via the
Richardson Staircase. The swim is supported by 15-20 kayaks as
well as the Washington, DC Metropolitan Police Harbor Division
and the DC Fire and EMS.
The 40K Bike: The Nissan Transition area, located in
East West Potomac Park adjacent to the Potomac River on the
southern side of the Lincoln Memorial, features few bikes per
race and a wider transition area. Triathletes take Independence
Avenue eastbound, turn left on 15th, right on Constitution,
turn around just before 6th, head west on Constitution,
turnaround just east of 17th, turn right on 15th, right onto
Independence Ave westbound, onto Rock Creek Parkway, exit to
Potomac River Freeway North, exit to the Whitehurst Freeway,
left onto Canal Road, onto Clara Barton Parkway, turnaround
prior to Glen Echo, east on Clara Barton, exit onto Whitehurst
Freeway, exit onto Potomac River Freeway South, turn back onto
Rock Creek Parkway heading north, turnaround south of
Connecticut Avenue, south on Rock Creek Parkway, onto
Independence Avenue eastbound to bike finish. The 10K Run: Runners head south on Ohio Drive SW, turn
around through the parking lot at Hains Point, north on Ohio
Drive SW, onto the water side lanes of Ohio Drive, turn right
on Basin Drive, cross Maine Avenue, turn right onto 15th, turn
right onto Independence Avenue, immediate left onto 14th, right
on Constitution, left on 6th, right on Pennsylvania Avenue,
turnaround just before 3rd, finish at 7th and Pennsylvania in
front of the U.S. Navy Memorial and The National Archives. All
roads for the course will be completely closed to traffic
thanks to the support of the DC Metropolitan Police and the
United States Park Police.
"The course was simply fantastic," raved William W. "It's a
rare treat to get to bike, run and swim amongst such incredible
sites."
"It was an awesome course," commented Patty C. "It ranks right
up there with other big city events I've done in New York, Los
Angeles and Chicago in terms of the 'cool' factor and scenery.
I especially liked the finish - and being able to wander around
on Pennsylvania Avenue with the U.S. Capitol on one end and the
White House on the other!"
