Colorado's Colleen De Reuck was the surprise winner on Saturday morning as she qualified for her first U.S. Olympic Team. De Reuck, who will turn 40 on April 13, overtook pre-race favorite and American Record Holder Deena Kastor of Mammoth Lakes, CA in the final miles of the race. De Reuck's time of 2:28:25 was a new Olympic Trials record and was more than a minute ahead of Kastor. Jen Rhines, of Ardmore, PA placed third and qualified for her second US Olympic Team (10,000-meters, 2000).

The race started on a sunny, near perfect day on the track that hosted the Olympic Games 100 years earlier. One hundred twenty- three women started the race that included a four-lap tour of the historic track before heading out on the spectator-friendly loop course. Blake Russell of Acton, Massachusetts took control of the race early, leading from the gun and pressing the pace for the majority of the race. Russell split 1:12:17 at the halfway point, more than 47 seconds ahead of Kastor.

Russell would eventually relinquish her lead at the 19-mile mark when pre-race favorite Kastor passed her. Russell managed to hold together pretty well and still finished fourth with a personal best time of 2:30:32.

Leading the way amongst local finishers was Alexandria's Heather Hanscom. The 26-year-old winner of the 2003 Marine Corps Marathon had one of the breakthrough performances of the weekend with a solid sixth place finish, running 2:31:53 and slashing over six minutes off of her personal best. Woodbridge, Virginia resident Christina Wells finished 25th in 2:42:01 and Vienna's Meghan McLaughlin rounded out the local finishers with a 78th place showing.

After sending only one qualifier (Chris Clark) to the 2000 Games, all three women that qualified for the 2004 Olympic Games have met the new Olympic standard of 2:37:00 and will be representing the United States in Athens, Greece this summer.
