Background Information:
When the Marine Corps Marathon began in 1976, Dr. David
Brody was on the course handing out water to thirsty runners. He
ran the
second and third Marine Corps Marathons, and in 1979 Dr. Brody
became the
race Medical Director. When the Navy took over the main medical
responsibilities in the mid-1980s, Dr. Brody became the
Marathon's Civilian
Medical Consultant.
Dr. Brody is a member of American Society of
Sports Physicians, American College of Sports Medicine and
American Board of
Orthopedic Surgeons. He directs his lectures to runners of all
abilities,
touching on topics such as marathon training mileage, nutrition,
effects of
hot and cold weather, and details about the race itself.
Dr. Brody practices orthopedic surgery in Connecticut.
Marine Corps Marathon Information for 2002:
The mission of the Marine Corps Marathon is
to promote the United States Marine Corps commitment to physical
fitness by
organizing a "People's Marathon" where runners can achieve a
personal goal
and realize their full potential. More than 20,000 runners have
registered
to run one of the most scenic routes in the country: along the
Potomac,
around the Pentagon, down the National Mall and past the Capitol
Building.
This year's Marathon will be held Sunday, October 27, 2002 at
8:30 a.m. The
Marine Corps Marathon also hosts The Washington Post presents:
The Healthy
Kids Fun Run on Saturday, October 26 and the Marine Corps
Marathon 5K
presented by Deer Park on Sunday, October 27, immediately
following the
start of the Marathon.
