Georgia Avenue Day 5K "Run With the Mayor"
By William Milner
August 19, 2002
Washington, DC
For the Washington Running Report

Washington, DC Mayor Anthony Williams and Councilman Adrian Fenty will be running in the first annual Georgia Avenue Day 5K Run on August 24th, 2002. A cash prize of $500.00 will be awarded to the first place runner and other prizes and giveaways will mark the day. A large crowd is expected to run with the mayor and will receive free t-shirts, food, and refreshments.

The 5K begins at 8:15 AM at Georgia Avenue and Missouri Avenue NW, and will end on Georgia Avenue at Banneker Field (near Howard University Hospital). Early registration is $15 for adults and $10 for youths (age 18 and under). Registration the day of the race is $20 for adults, but the cost for youth runners will remain $10. Runners may register prior to the day of the race online. For more information about how to register, or to have a registration form mailed to you, please call Yoahk at (202) 321-8066.

The 5K will mark the beginning of Georgia Avenue Day, which annually draws approximately 30,000 people to the Georgia Avenue corridor. In past years, the focus has been on food, music, and community togetherness. This year, under the careful planning of Support-A-Child, Georgia Avenue Day will also focus on important community issues such as health, fitness, and positive music. Many of the illnesses that affect DC residents, including obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, can be prevented or managed by regular exercise and proper diet. The "Run With the Mayor" is intended to bring a greater awareness to the citizens of the Northwest, DC area about the benefits of health and fitness.

Proceeds from the 5K will go to Support-A-Child's educational program, Positive Music Works, which is dedicated to assisting talented young adults by helping them build their ability as musicians. Once they have received professional training, they are able to use the programs to express themselves creatively and without profanity or negativity.

Your support will make a successful Georgia Avenue Day. Please register today and pass this information on to your friends, family, and members of your running club. Remember, if you are unable to run yourself, your $5 contribution will allow a young person from the DC area to participate in the run. Support-A-Child, International is a 501(c)3 organization and contributions are tax-deductible.
