Urban Challenge Makes Its Washington Debut
By Adrienne Heald August 21, 2002 Washington, DC For the Washington Running Report
On Saturday, August 31st, up to 300 teams of two will hit the
streets of Washington, D.C. to play Urban Challenge, an original
new adventure race that puts to the test how well participants
know D.C.A cross between road racing and a treasure hunt, Urban Challenge
requires teams to decipher clues to twelve hidden checkpoints
throughout the city that they must visit--and be photographed at-
-in correct order before racing back to the finish line. There's no established race course . . . strategy is everything
as teams plot the fastest way to get to each checkpoint on foot
and/or by using Metro lines or buses. Along the way, they keep
an eye out for the elusive UC Skip Man and use cell phones to
call for help with the clues. A lightning trivia round kicks
things off in a daylong adventure that leads to a chance to
compete for $50,000 in the Urban Challenge November national
championships in Las Vegas. Washington D.C. is the 15th leg of Urban Challenge's inaugural
twenty-city tour of the United States. Game founder Kevin
McCarthy developed the unique road racing adventure from a game
he created for his daughter(1)s 12th birthday. "We had Kate and
her friends racing all over town taking photos and solving
clues. The entire day was such a blast, that I decided we had to
come up with a way to let more people in on the fun." Urban Challenge will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 31,
at The Front Page Bar & Grill, located at 1333 New Hampshire
Avenue, NW (between New Hampshire and 19th street) in D.C. The
event is open to the public.
