Under Armour Performance Apparel announced today that it is the
title sponsor of the Baltimore Marathon. The event will be named
Under Armour's Baltimore Marathon beginning with the third
annual event on October 18. Under the three-year sponsorship
agreement with Corrigan Sports Enterprises, the event manager,
Under Armour will supply all marathon and half-marathon
participants with its signature performance apparel, making it
the nation's first marathon ever to provide participants with an
alternative to old-fashioned cotton shirts. "Under Armour's Baltimore Marathon will allow all marathon and
half-marathon participants to experience the difference of
performance apparel--clothing that doesn't weigh them down like
sweat-soaked cotton t-shirts do," commented Steve Battista,
director of marketing for Under Armour Performance Apparel. "The
Under Armour Baltimore Marathon is an ideal way for us to
introduce the running world to the newest gear from the
innovator of performance apparel."
Each participant in Under Armour's Baltimore Marathon and the
half-marathon will receive an Under Armour LooseGear shirt to
help them keep cool and dry throughout the course of the race
because of Under Armour's Moisture Transport System that pulls
perspiration away from the skin. Under Armour's LooseGear line
is ideal for running due to its generous cut for comfort. These
short-sleeved performance shirts, which normally retail for
$29.99, will feature the newly-designed official race logo.
"Under Armour's title sponsorship of the Baltimore Marathon
enables us to further anchor ourselves in the community we call
home, while providing the athletes participating in the event
with gear that will help them achieve their performance
potential," commented Kevin Plank, founder and president of
Under Armour.
Under Armour plans to promote its activities with the marathon
over the next three years in media outlets such Runner's
World, Running Times, Sports Illustrated, and
ESPN The Magazine, and the company's logo will be
prominent throughout the 26.2 mile course. In addition, Under
Armour is on course to have more than sixty participants in the
race, representing more than one-quarter of the company's
employees.
"On behalf of the City of Baltimore and Corrigan Sports
Enterprises, I am thrilled to announce our partnership with
Under Armour, the originator of performance apparel and an
outstanding member of the Baltimore business community,"
commented Lee Corrigan, principal of Corrigan Sports
Enterprises. "We were looking to bring a local company to the
forefront and are confident that with Under Armour's support and
prestige, this running event will achieve unprecedented
successes, serving to boost both Baltimore's economy and the
performance of runners competing in this event."
In addition to the Under Armour's Baltimore Marathon on October
18, Corrigan Sports will host the CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield
Half-Marathon, the Fila 5K Run, the Kid's Fun Run, and the GEICO
Team Relay, a race within the marathon that includes 750
four-person corporate teams competing for the Corporate Cup.
Also scheduled is the 1st Annual Armed Forces Challenge which
will crown seven champions with military experience--male and
female winners of the marathon, half-marathon, and team relay
(male, female and mixed teams). Military personnel also receive
a $5 discount on their marathon entry fee. Baltimore's WBAL TV
and Radio are serving as the media partners for the event.
Under Armour is the originator of performance apparel, a line of
moisture-wicking microfiber clothing that pulls perspiration
away from the skin to keep athletes cool, dry, and light
throughout the course of a game, practice, or workout. Most of
the products are compression garments that help prevent muscle
fatigue while working out. The diverse line includes apparel for
all seasons and climates, allowing the body to regulate its
temperature naturally through the process of moisture transport.
Under Armour manufactures its exclusive fabric domestically and
boasts six products lines: HeatGear, ColdGear, LooseGear,
AllSeasonGear, TurfGear, and Street Gear, covering all climates
and game situations. Under Armour is available worldwide through
its Web site,
www.underarmour.com, Eastbay catalog, and most
major sporting goods stores, including: Champs, Dick's Sporting
Goods, Gart Sports, Galyan's Trading Company, Hibbett Sports,
Modell's, and The Sports Authority.
