Georgetown Classic 10K Not to be Held in 2003
Capital Running Company, organizers of the Georgetown Classic 10K race, announced that the popular fall race will not be held in 2003. "We are very disappointed, as this would have been the 24th annual race," said Rick Freedman, owner of Capital Running Company.

The race, usually held in early October, was the victim of a scheduling change, lack of police resources due to another massive event on the alternate weekend, and lack of sponsorship. In addition, Freedman said "we have found it increasingly difficult to get a permit for this race," typically held on M Street at Wisconsin Avenue. After last year's race, the police informed Freedman that the course could not be used again.

The loss of sponsorship over the last several years has caused the race organizers to cut corners, and Capital Running Company was not comfortable putting on an event that did not deliver for the runners. "We are working with a group of potential sponsors to bring the race back in 2004," Freedman said. "We're excited about the possibilities."

Noting that many runners have expressed disappointment about the loss of the Georgetown Classic 10K, Freedman added, "We hope that runners looking for a fall 10K will register for our Veterans Day 10K. We were pleased to be able to bring this popular race back to West Potomac Park this year." Information on the Veterans Day 10K, scheduled for November 9, can be found on the race Web site.
