The 33rd Annual Neptune Festival is an Action-Packed Adventure for Adrenaline Junkies
By Mandy Claggett

Virginia Beach, VA
For the Washington Running Report

Virginia Beach festival challenges those who live life to the fullest with running, surfing, biking, and swimming competitions.

It is an addiction from which millions all over the world suffer. The symptoms include a constant need to bike, run, swim, surf ... anything to get the adrenaline pumping. They are known as "adrenaline junkies," and the best outlet to release the energy is in Virginia Beach. The Neptune Festival, Virginia Beach's oldest-running festival, has a series of high-energy activities dedicated to those needing lots of adventure.

The 24th annual Sandman Triathlon on September 17 is a three- punch cure. Test your physical conditioning and stamina, beginning with a grueling .62-mile open ocean swim, moving on to a 14-mile bike ride and completing the race with a 3.1-mile run. Known as one of the best triathlons in the Mid-Atlantic region, this event hosted more than 700 participants and thousands of spectators last year.

On September 30, challenge yourself to withstand the 29th annual Neptune's 8K Run at the Virginia Beach oceanfront. This official Road Runners Club of America Eastern 8K Championship is one of the top races in the region. Participants race down Atlantic Avenue to Rudee Inlet and back, while enjoying the ocean breezes and cheering fans. Registration is required to participate.

Hang ten, dudes and dudettes!! The last step of the high-octane program is Neptune's Surfing Classic on September 30 and October 1. Hundreds of totally radical surfers gather on 10th street at the oceanfront to battle the waves during this classic surfing competition. Registration is required to participate. New to the roster this year, Neptune's Beach Flag Football Championship will be held September 30 - October 12 from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on 13th Street. This fun, competitive flag football championship is sure to be an enjoyable addition to the weekend. Slip on the bathing suit and be ready to get dirty. Challenging for all skill levels, the Neptune Volleyball Tournament at 9th Street on the oceanfront features 2-on-2 competition for a variety of ages to enjoy.

After the competition, it may be time to kick back and refuel. Relax. Indulge in the scrumptious festival foods while watching fireworks and the grand parade during the Neptune Festival Boardwalk Weekend. Stroll - rather than run - along the boardwalk and admire the masterpieces created during the North American Sand Sculpting Championship. Enjoy the sight of someone else competing for a change.

The Neptune Festival is produced by a private, non-profit organization and directed by a volunteer board of directors. Support and funding for the event comes from the community at large and corporate sponsorships.
