Harris Teeter presents the 20th YMCA Loudoun County Leesburg 10K & 20K
Men's and Women's 10K Records Fall
By James Moreland August 10, 2008 Leesburg, VA For the Washington Running Report
Photo above: Dustin Whitlow (22) of Ashburn, VA is third in the
10K with 32:39.
ChronoTrack made its debut in the area at
one of the biggest 10Ks of the summer. The YMCA Loudoun County
Leesburg 10K presented by Harris Teeter had a record 670
finish in the shorter race in its 20th year. The 20K started a
mere five years ago. It also produced its largest field with
668
finishers. The ChronoTrack D-tag is a disposable timing system that starts
as a strip on the side of the bib. Runners peel off the strip
and loop it through their shoes, sealing it with a small sticky
peel-off strip into a D shape. The "mats" are much smaller than
the traditional ChampionChip system. The D-tag works in a
similar way to read each runner's individual starting and
finishing time to give them their personal net time for the
race. The system works fast to allow for quick race day
results, which Capital Running Company has traditionally posted
online before leaving the race site.
The 10K
Speedy Steven Crane
(26) of Silver Spring, MD blasted across the line with a new
course record in the 10K. This was Crane's first trip to
Leesburg and, as is often the case, he had to navigate the
course by himself. His record 30:58 crushed a fine effort for
the runner-up spot by Paolo Natali (28) of Washington, DC. In
photo, Natali's 32:32 placing was in doubt till the very end.
Dustin Whitlow (22) of Ashburn, VA, running for Potomac River
Running, finished just eight seconds back in third. The next three runners in the 10K were the three Js.
Justin Fritzins (24) of Purcellville, VA led the trio improving
a place on last year's 34:11 to prevail in 33:30. Fifth place
Jesse Jaeger (20) of Kingsville, MD, having just left the
teens,
was next in 34:13. Meanwhile, Jesse Saldana (18) of Leesburg,
VA made a massive improvement over last's year fifth age group
placing, earning second Leesburg resident in 37:08. He smoked
the course in 34:49 to earn both titles. The next 30 years of men's records have been pretty
untouchable. Michael Elabarger (35) of Leesburg, VA had a very
respectable 35:37 but well off last year's record of 32:04 by
Ray Pusgley. Pugsley will be 40 next year and is chomping at
the bit, thinking about taking down the venerable Jim Hage's
masters division record at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K of
25:17 set in 1998. Mark Stickley took away Chuck Moeser's 40-44
record, set in 2005, with a swift 33:08 well ahead of this
year's top finisher, Martin Calhoun (46) of Herndon, VA, who
was top master and top 45-49 as well, finishing in 36:32.
George Buckheit (51) of Reston, VA was out running alongside
some of the top women finishers from the Pacers running team.
Then, in the
last two miles, he laid down the hammer to win the grandmaster
spot in 37:07. Buckheit is well capable of getting a lot closer
to Moeser's grandmaster record of 33:54. Maybe next year he
will feel the burn. Tim Morgan of Damascus, MD,
was about a minute off Patrick Griffith's 55-59 age group
record. But he was more concerned with holding
off rival Richard Adams, Jr. Adams finally succumbed, 38:58 to
39:16. Two years ago Griffith set the 60-64 record in 38:52. With
a long streak of records, he had held off the heir to the
throne, Jason Page of Hamilton, VA. Just as Page was getting
ready to settle into the top spot, along comes Bill Joyce of
Herndon, VA. Last year this "novice" took aim at Griffith's
1:23:29 record in the 20K, hosing the field by ten minutes with
1:25:44. This year he spotted Page, an early lead in the 10K.
Page had some car trouble getting to the race but he had no
trouble jetting out at the word GO! Joyce wisely stayed back on
the hillier out portion of the race. On the way back down, he
moved up on Page's shoulder around mile four. He noted that he
almost waited too long to pull away as Page has a ferocious
kick. Joyce prevailed in 39:18 just a few seconds ahead of
Page's 39:37. Chan Robbins (71) of Arlington, VA is the leader in his
division, the one with a target on his back. When he entered
the 65-69 division in 2002, he quickly set the record
with 45:00. That held up until today when Sonny Barber (67) of
Falls Church, VA rushed to the finish in 44:32. Robbins was
setting his sights on one of the oldest records still out
there;
Dixon Hemphill's 47:50. With second place Ken Quincy more than
a minute behind, Robbins was not pressed enough and fell just
short with 47:56. In the photo, Leo Wyne (71) of Falls Church,
VA was one of nine men older than 70 to finish the 10K.
Katie Read (22) of Arlington, VA (in photo) is making a name
for herself. Two weeks ago she won the inaugural
Crystal City Twilighter 5K in 17:16. Today
she bolted out of gate against an elite field and skipped past
the open record by four seconds in 35:44. That leaves only
three records still holding from 1998. Kristen Henehan (29) of
Washington, DC was not giving it away. She had won the Run for
the Rainforest 5K in June with 17:23 just one week after
finishing third at
Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 36:25. She
battled down the final mile to an excellent 36:08.Five years ago Alisa Harvey (42) had tied Heidi Gerken'a sub
masters record in 36:42. Today she was gunning for third woman,
just as she had racing 17:43 at Crystal City. She had laughed
off an offhand remark on whether she would be running the 20K.
Then she got down to business. She had no challenger at her
level in the masters field. Anita Freres (43) of Reston, VA ran
a fine 41:44 for second. Still, Harvey's only competition was
that pesky record she had set last year in 37:15. Was that on
her mind when she churned up the final 200-meter hill on
Harrison Street? She was third overall in a new masters record
37:07. Fourth place Elena Orlova (37) of Germantown, MD had a slow
time for her expectations, racing 38:08. She has not been seen
racing here since late 2006 when she was regularly racing low
17s for the 5K. Fifth place Cara Fossum (17) of Ashburn, VA
took a half minute extra to get her race underway. She crossed
the line as the first teen right in stride with seventh place
Erica Nemmers (36) of Herndon, VA at 38:53. Sixth place Mary
Davison had already crossed in 38:35. Fossum's net time was
38:22, within shouting distance of Andrea Dworak's teen record of
38:00 set in 2000. Carole Roeder (51) of Ashburn, VA was the third master and the
grandmaster champion in 43:47, less than a minute off Sandra
Adams's 42:56 record. In the 45-49 division, last year's record
setter and fifth overall was Linda Foley (45) of Oak Hill, VA
in 39:57. She was going to successfully gun down the 20K record
today. That left Sushila Nanda (47) of Arlington, VA to take
home a cow bell for the division title with 44:09. Freyda
Greenberg (59) of Falls Church, VA was a good half mile off the
record with 48:01. But she finished strongly ahead of Linda
Kearney (60) of Herndon, VA who cremated the oldest course
record, set by Charlotte Edwards back in 1997, with 52:11.
Kearney ran 48:46. The only woman 65 or older in either race
was Pauline Ely (68), all the way from Hampton, VA and she ran
the 20K.
The 20K
Michael Wardian (34) of Arlington, VA (in photo) loves to go
long. Sure, he runs a lot of 10Ks but he runs just as many
marathons as well as winning ultras, as did this year at 50K
and
100K. Besides, why run behind the virtually unbeatable Steven
Crane in the 10K when you can get twice the miles for your
racing bucks? Wardian looked relaxed, cruising well ahead of
the
field. He was well off Aaron Church's course record of 1:04:29
set in 2006. Still, a nifty 1:06:28 looks sharp on a running
resume. Some of the race cognoscenti expected Bart Borghuis to
challenge Wardian, though he seems to run best at shorter
stuff, such as the We've Got Your Back 4M in 19:57. Besides, he
had his hands full with D. J. Palmer (22) of Chantilly, VA.
Palmer got by him on the way home and scooted to the runner-up
spot in 1:08:28. Borghuis, running with a favored #1 bib,
settled for third in 1:08:57. Christopher Bain (31) of Rockville, MD was part of a large
crowd that migrates across the Potomac River every year to run
this event. His 1:09:28 put him solidly in fourth place. Billy
Askey (25) of Arlington, VA was next in 1:10:06. The next two
spots were run neck-and-neck the whole last 5K with George
Ingham (23) of Herndon, VA prevailing in a photo finish 1:10:33
for sixth place. Eric Makovsky (35) of Washington, DC was on
hand before the race to sing our National Anthem. With his
pipes warmed up, he charged out to a solid sub master victory
in 1:13:12. He will not be able to rest on his laurels. Mega
racer Karsten Brown (34) of Front Royal, VA will be back next
year. He followed three age group winners, including Makovsky,
with a PR 1:13:37. The second was teen victor Chris Hague (19)
of Kensington, MD in 1:13:35. Third in line was Christopher
Hamley doing a reprise from his course record 1:12:49 in 2006
with a swift 1:13:36 today. Mark Neff (46) of Derwood, MD topped his division with a swift
1:15:17 to fire some state rivalry. Gary Grimsley (54) of
Springfield, VA had his back with a large smile on his face to
top his division with 1:21:40. He was not the top grandmaster.
Though only about five feet six inches, Alan Pemberton (55) of
Silver Spring, MD casts the long shadow of doom to division
rivals. This top ranked runner spanked a solid field, winning
by more than ten minutes. He cast aside one of Patrick
Griffith's four cherished records with an excellent 1:17:45.
Griffith had set the record in 1:19:14 the inaugural year,
albeit a slightly different course. This year's course was
slightly different by about three meters. If a tree falls in
the forest and no one is there . . . Well, it fell across the
path about two long steps before the turnaround. Runners ducked
briefly into the woods to race around the cone that sent them
back up the long hill that lasted from 10K to 8.25 miles. Bernard Wright (61) of Pomfret, MD had a fine effort in 1:26:22
to oust runner-up Ronnie Wong (61) of Catonsville, MD by about
a minute. Richard Pane (65) of Herndon, VA had an
excellent 1:35:53 to win the 65-69 division, though it was
nowhere near
the untouchable 1:28:21 run by Lou Shapiro last year. Jerry
Lewis (74) of Reston, VA promised to run hard, winning easily
in 1:46:44. He also assured us before the race that his 2006
record of 1:41:32 would be safe this year. Maybe next year he
can get the race to make a 70-74 division and he can set the 75
and older division record.
Veena Reddy (29) of Arlington, VA looked good for the win but
she could not let up at all. Mary Kate Bailey had set the
record with 1:13:50 in 2006, her monster year. Reddy held off
the charge of Lindsay Wilkins (30) of Arlington, VA who had
whipped past Melissa Tanner (27) of Bethesda, MD late in the
race. Tanner ran 1:17:07. Wilkins closed toward the top spot
of 1:16:07 but settled for the runner-up in 1:16:44. Meghan
Ridgley (29) of Reston, VA claimed the last spot in the lead
pack with 1:18:42.The next three runners all broke 1:22:00. Samantha Kirby (39)
of Arlington, VA was third in the group, just one second under
to win the sub masters. Cathy Pugsley (39) of Sterling, VA had
set the standard with 1:20:10 in 2006. This year she settled
for third in 1:27:49. Her husband Ray told us that she was not
so concerned with awards. And I have a bridge to sell you in
Brooklyn. She will be back next year and knocking on the door
of Laura Nelson's masters record 1:22:23. This year Brooke
Curran (40) of Alexandria, VA won the division in 1:28:56. The
top master, however, was record setting Linda Foley (46) of Oak
Hill, VA. As she is want to do, she won handily in 1:25:18 to
squeeze by Cecelia Lutz's time of 1:25:39, set in 2006, while
decimating her division by nearly a minute per mile. Makes you want to say, "No way!" Deedee Loughran (50) of
Herndon, VA smashed the record set last year by grandmaster
dame Betty Blank with 1:26:29. Blank had run 1:29:15.
Loughran's race was phenomenal. Her last race was a 20:44 5K,
which promises a 1:30:36 20K. Last year she surpassed
expectations, winning the 45-49 division in 1:28:09. This
year's record may be the most impressive age graded 20K in the
entire field. That is not to say that Betty Blank (55) of Falls
Church, VA did not gather up another course record. This year
she ran 1:30:46. We know she was fussing all the way back down
the course. She just hates to slow down. Alice Franks (60) of Rockville, MD debuted in the new division
close to Jane Poole's (Williams) 1:43:48 record from last
year. She looked a little surprised as she coasted across the
finish in 1:44:06. Easy money says she will be taking down the
record next year.
As always there were big bold mile markers for both races.
There was lots of water at the two water stations (four coming
and going) for the 10K and the three (six coming and going) for
the 20K. The Gatorade and Gu also helped challenge the August
weather that most agreed was as mild as could be expected. At
the finish, the trough in front of the Tuscarora Mill restaurant was filled and refilled to capacity with ice covered
replenishment drinks, water, and soda pop. There was lots of
fresh fruit, cookies, and granola bars. Volunteers met runners
right at the finish with wet, cooling hand towels to bring them
back to normal temperatures. With the new ChronoTrack
disposable scoring system, tired runners did not even have to
stop to take a chip out of their shoes. They could head
straight for the food and drink. Then they could go down to the
awards area and sit in the shade and listen to music while waiting to hear the award winners clanging their cowbell awards. It seemed as if parking might have been an issue as one nearby
lot was closed for repairs but runners got the word by e-mail
in time to prepare for a search and most everyone found a spot
easily. Announcer Lyman Jordan kept runners informed about the
new scoring system and continued to urge them to the back
parking lot before the porta-john lines got too long. The long
lines never happened. With a lot of experienced planning and some dedicated, cheerful
volunteers, this race continues to be the signature 10K race
for Northern Virginia. Certainly it is the 20K to race in this
region as well. As Leesburg grows, runners are finding more
quality races out in Loudoun County, such as the
Freeze Your Gizzard 5K in
November and the
REHAU Rotary Resolution 10K Adventure Race to start
2009. And, of course, this race is part of the
2008 Loudoun Race Series.
