2004 Los Angeles Marathon Prize Purse to Top $260,000
In this season of giving, the City of Los Angeles Marathon today announced an increase of 41% above last year's race day payout. A total of $260,200 in cash and Honda automobiles will be available to the top finishers on race day - March 7, 2004. In addition, the winner of "The Challenge" will take home more than $100,000 in cash and prizes.

Both the male and female winners each receive $25,000 and a new Honda Accord EX V-6 (valued at $26,400), with second place in both divisions earning $15,000 and third taking home $11,000. Participants in the Wheelchair Open and Quad divisions will receive a total of $10,400. Runners in places 2-10 will see an increase of $21,500 from last year.

"Marathon competitors are becoming faster and faster," said Dr. William Burke, president of the City of Los Angeles Marathon. "We want to reward those who have finished in a field of such incredible competition a prize that is comparable to their effort preparing for and running in the City of Los Angeles Marathon."

The $260,200 total prize purse includes an additional $50,000 to the first man or woman to cross the finish line first as part of "The Challenge." With this concept, the elite women will start approximately 20 minutes prior to the men and the remainder of the field in order to add excitement for spectators along the course and compelling drama to the live broadcast.

The 19th City of Los Angeles Marathon presented by Honda will be broadcast LIVE exclusively on NBC4 & Telemundo 52, with four hours of coverage beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 7, 2004. Marathon sponsors include American Airlines, City of Angels Medical Center, Emerald Nuts, The Gas Company, NBC4, Telemundo 52, Saucony and Sparkletts. To date, more than 350,000 runners and walkers have participated in the L.A. Marathon. For more information and to register for the race, log on to www.lamarathon.com.
