2004 Los Angeles Marathon Prize Purse to Top $260,000
In this season of giving, the City of Los Angeles
Marathon today announced an increase of 41% above last year's
race day
payout. A total of $260,200 in cash and Honda automobiles will
be available
to the top finishers on race day - March 7, 2004. In addition,
the winner of
"The Challenge" will take home more than $100,000 in cash and
prizes.Both the male and female winners each receive $25,000 and a new
Honda Accord
EX V-6 (valued at $26,400), with second place in both divisions
earning
$15,000 and third taking home $11,000. Participants in the
Wheelchair Open
and Quad divisions will receive a total of $10,400. Runners in
places 2-10
will see an increase of $21,500 from last year. "Marathon competitors are becoming faster and faster," said Dr.
William
Burke, president of the City of Los Angeles Marathon. "We want
to reward
those who have finished in a field of such incredible
competition a prize
that is comparable to their effort preparing for and running in
the City of
Los Angeles Marathon." The $260,200 total prize purse includes an additional $50,000 to
the first
man or woman to cross the finish line first as part of "The
Challenge." With
this concept, the elite women will start approximately 20
minutes prior to
the men and the remainder of the field in order to add
excitement for
spectators along the course and compelling drama to the live
broadcast. The 19th City of Los Angeles Marathon presented by Honda will be
broadcast
LIVE exclusively on NBC4 & Telemundo 52, with four hours of
coverage
beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 7, 2004. Marathon
sponsors include
American Airlines, City of Angels Medical Center, Emerald Nuts,
The Gas
Company, NBC4, Telemundo 52, Saucony and Sparkletts. To date,
more than
350,000 runners and walkers have participated in the L.A.

The City of Los Angeles Marathon prize purse totals $260,200,
which includes
