A one-mile sprint up King Street will take place on New Year's
Eve--a first in the City's 258-year history.Starting at Alexandria City Hall and finishing at Alexandria's
Union Station, the inaugural King Street Mile begins at 5:00
p.m. on December 31, 2007. Presented by First Night Alexandria
and Pacers Running Store, the 200-person race is being
sponsored by Virginia Paving Company, Fitness Together and Nike.
"Alexandria is excited about hosting this first-ever mad dash
up King Street," says Michael Geissinger, president of First
Night Alexandria, one of the two presenting race sponsors. "The
community support has been fantastic, just fantastic."
The King Street Mile has received the backing of local
residents, businesses and government. The King Street Garden
Foundation, Upper King Street Neighborhood Association, Old
Town Business & Professional Association, and Old Town Civic
Association submitted letters of support to Alexandria City
Council, which approved the USATF certified race in August.
"We're thrilled runners of all ages and levels will be spending
New Year's Eve in Alexandria," adds Kathy Dalby, vice president
of Pacers Running Store. "We still have some openings for the
King Street Mile and hope folks will like to be a part of
running history this New Year's Eve."
The awards ceremony will be held inside Alexandria's Union
Station, 110 Callahan Drive, at the conclusion of the race.
First Night Alexandria, the largest family-focused and alcohol-
free New Year's Eve event in Northern Virginia, will kick-off
immediately following the race at the same location.
