The tradition continues, the 13th George Washington Parkway
Classic 10 Miler and the 5th George Washington Parkway Classic
5K will be held on Sunday, April 27, 2003, (NEW DATE) 8:00 a.m.
The scenic, point-to-point certified course runs on the George
Washington Memorial Parkway which will be closed to all traffic.
The 10 Miler will start at the traffic circle at Mount Vernon
and the 5K will start at Belle Haven Park. The finish line will
be at Oronoco Bay Park at the end of Union Street.On-line registration is available through the new

The race entry fee for the 10 Mile Race: $30 until April 12th,
$35 from April 13th until
April 26th. The race day registration will be $50.
The race entry fee for the 5K Race: $15 until April $12, $20
from April 13th until
April 26th. The race day registration will be $25.
In person registration can be done at Pacers of Old Town at 1301
King Street, Alexandria, Va., (703-836-1463). The hours are
Tuesday thru Friday 10am-7pm, Saturday 10am-5pm, and Sunday 12
noon - 4pm. Registration and pack pick-up will be April 1st
through April 25th.
Bus transportation will be provided from Old Town Alexandria,
near the finish line, to
Mount Vernon and Belle Haven Park. The first bus departs at 6:00
a.m., and the last bus
leaves Old Town at 7:30 a.m.
An added feature this year will be a children's 1 Mile non-
competitive run.
There is a total of $3,700 in cash awards for the top finishers,
male and female (open and master). In the 10 Miler, the top
three open runners receive $500-$300-$150 and the top three
masters receive $300-$200-$100. The first place wheelchair
finisher receives $75.
In the 5K, cash awards go to the first place male and female,
open, $150, and master, $100. The first place wheelchair
receives $25.
In both races, merchandise age group awards will be presented
three deep in 10 year age groups and 5-year age groups starting
at age 40.
The George Washington Parkway Classic is presented by Verizon
and the race benefits the community through the James P. Moran
Grants and the Alexandria Boys and Girls Club. Additional
sponsors include Advanced Power Technologies, Inc., Inova Mount
Vernon Hospital, New Balance, Pacers of Old Town Alexandria, and
United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.
