Marine Corps Marathon Finishers to Receive First-of-Its-Kind Interactive Results CD
By Beth Cline February 18, 2005 Quantico,VA For the Washington Running Report
The Marine Corps Marathon continues a combined tradition of
dedication, sportsmanship and patriotism. Since its inception,
over 300,000 civilian and military runners from all walks of
life have participated, deservingly earning the event its
nickname "The People's Marathon." The 30th Marine Corps
Marathon will be held on October 30, 2005. Rolling registration
begins on April 6, 2005 at midnight EST on
www.marine marathon.com.
The Marine Corps Marathon, in partnership with Iowa-based
MarathonFoto, has released the first interactive results CD to
all 16,399 runners who finished the 29th Annual Marine Corps
Marathon held in October 2004. "The MCM has always been on the cutting edge of race technology
from being among the first races to use timing chips to
utilizing a wireless network to track runners," said Rick
Nealis, Marine Corps Marathon Race Director. "I am excited to
use this proprietary innovative CD technology to make the
marathon experience more memorable and enjoyable for our
runners." This first-of-its-kind CD takes finishers on a journey through
their Marine Corps Marathon adventure. Runners are invited to
click through the marathon's history including previous winners,
course records, and celebrity marathoners. The disk provides a
multimedia showcase of "The People's Marathon" including a slide
show from the Marathon and Healthy Kids Fun Run, searchable
results database and a congratulations letter from the 33rd
Commandant of the Marine Corps. "The Marine Corps Marathon's finisher CD is a website on disk
with live links. It offers memories in a live format enabling
every runner to relive the fun and challenges of race weekend,"
said MarathonFoto VP for Business Development and CD Project
Manager Gerald Swanson. Finisher results are searchable by first or last name or bib
number. Designed to replace the traditional hard copy results
book, this CD offers runners a more streamlined process of
finding finisher times and enables display of greater volume of
MCM information. Programmed in Flash, the disk is self-
contained, unlike previous CD concepts that would have required
specific navigation and application software. The MCM results
CD runs with its own system and can play on any computer,
regardless of installed programs. The CD also provided the Marine Corps Marathon with unique
visibility opportunity for its sponsors and vendors. A quick
click on a sponsor logo will connect the runner directly to the
sponsor webpage or webstore offering commemorative products from
personalized DVDs to photos to running apparel.
The interactive finisher results CD was mailed along with
finisher certificates in January 2005.
