Middle distance star Alan Webb has decided to run in the
3,000 meters at the Tyson Invitational on Friday night,
February 9, making for an intriguing distance race at the
premier indoor track event of the winter.Webb was originally scheduled to run in the mile, the race that
made him a teenage superstar when he broke Jim Ryun's high
school national record, but elected to move to the 3,000-meter
run to fit into his training cycle. During his career, Webb
has earned two USA Championships (2004 & 2005) and was a member
of the 2004
Olympic Games Team USA in the 1,500-meter run. "Having Alan Webb at the Tyson Invitational is wonderful,"
Tyson Invitational meet director Art Huff said. "He is a
superior athlete that is competitive from anywhere between the
mile to 10,000 meters. His addition to the 3,000 meters makes
that one of the more interesting races of the day when you
consider who he will go up against. With Webb entering the mile, it makes the competition even
stouter for former Razorbacks Alistair Cragg and Josphat Boit,
and professionals Chris Lukezic (a training partner and
Georgetown University graduate) and former Badger standout Matt
Tegenkamp. Cragg was
a 13-time all-American for the Razorbacks in his career and
seven-time NCAA Champion, while Boit took two NCAA titles and
earned eight all-America honors. Lukezic won his first USA
championship last winter and was ranked number two in the 1,500
by Track & Field News in 2006. Tegenkamp specializes in the
5,000-
meter run and holds the fourth fastest 5K time in U.S.
history. The Tyson Invitational is scheduled to be televised on ESPN2 on
Sunday, February 11 from 1:00-3:00 pm on ESPN2. See the Men's Inv. 3000 Meters field (as of 2/6/7)
