Sports Backers Launch "OurSB"

Free Community Web site Connects Active Runners in Richmond

Richmond, VA
For the Washington Running Report

In another first for the active community of Richmond, Sports Backers released a new free community Web site called "OurSB" where active adults can network by posting photos, blogs, messages and videos in an exciting interactive environment.

"OurSB allows runners in Richmond to network and get advice in a dynamic and interactive way. There's nothing else like it and we're proud to offer it to the community," says Jon Lugbill, Sports Backers executive director. "It's an opportunity for avid enthusiasts and beginners alike to learn from one another and to find others with similar interests, abilities and backgrounds. The constantly-changing content will give participants a reason to log on every day and find relevant material that is also entertaining."

The site can be accessed by going to www.sportsbackers.org, then clicking on OurSB. Much like My Space and Facebook, participants will see the most popular photos and videos on the home page and will be able to view and post blogs, sign up for relevant groups like biking, running and swimming, and respond to and post questions on the message board. You will also be able to select "friends" when you find others who have similar interests on the site. A simple sign in is all that is required to get started.

"OurSB is an excellent resource provided by Sports Backers. Richmond is home to many vibrant, active individuals and this will allow them to interact on a more consistent basis," says Sean Cusak, a local runner and duathlete. "The shared experiences and knowledge will make it more fun to become better at your chosen activities."

Emily Ward, a decorated University of Richmond runner and 13th place female finisher at the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K last year, agrees. "There are all sorts of loosely organized, yet supportive athletic sub-cultures in our city. Whether you are a first-time marathoner, a walker, a rock climber looking for some new boulders, or a kayaker seeking out the best line through Hollywood rapids, you realize that there are many people that share common interests right here in Richmond. OurSB allows you to connect and network with those people and facilitates your coming together with others whether it is for a run, to discuss a shared injury, share ideas, and tips or even to try something new."

Overall, the new site is a forum that will bring active people in Richmond together and will create a sense of community. The socialization that the site offers will be one of the biggest benefits to users. You can interact and talk with people who are interested in the same things as you and get to know people with common interests that you did not even know existed before. The site will become a place where everyone who exercises, no matter what ability, will be viewing and posting relevant information on a daily basis and then reaping the benefits from the networking and socialization it creates. Sports Backers is a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit organization founded in October 1991 to build a more vibrant community through sports. The mission of the organization is to maximize the community benefits of sports tourism in the region by:

* Creating, attracting and improving significant sporting events,

* Serving as a resource in the development and utilization of sports facilities and

* Aiding area youth through sports outreach programs.

These activities and programs strengthen the economy, provide health benefits to participants and make the region a more desirable place to live.
