6th Annual Break the Silence:

Run/Walk for Ovarian Cancer Gears Up for May 10, 2008 at the Reston Town Center
By Bruce Lung

Reston, VA
For the Washington Running Report

This year, Hier and Hanes steps up as the Platinum sponsor for the run/walk for the whisper. Race organizers are gearing up for another strong turnout for the 6th annual Break the Silence: Run/Walk for Ovarian Cancer to benefit the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition's awareness and education efforts.

Last year's race drew more than 1,100 people and raised approximately $120,000 for ovarian cancer education and awareness programs in Virginia. This year's 5K will again be contested on a certified course and will be sanctioned by USA Track & Field. More than 1,000 runners, including ovarian cancer survivors as well as their friends and family members, will compete in either the certified 5K along the scenic W&OD trail or in the 1-Mile event that winds its way through the Reston town center.

Once again, cash prizes will be awarded to top three male and female finishers in the 5K. The top two finishers in each of the age group categories will win gift certificates to Metro Run/Walk, the official running shoe and apparel store of the race. Several hundred spectators will be present along the routes and at the finish, making the Break the Silence: Run/Walk for Ovarian Cancer an increasingly popular sporting event in Northern Virginia.
