Margie Shapiro of Annandale, VA and the Potomac River Running stores in Burke and Ashburn (photo left) trounced the competition at the Colonial Beach Duathlon with her almost three-minute lead over second-place finisher Diane Haupt of Virginia Beach, finishing in 1:47:03. Karen Fralen of Stafford, VA was third in 1:52:11.

The duathlon format was necessitated by health concerns about the amount of algae in the Potomac River, for the first time in the 20-year history of this race. Although the swimming ban was lifted the day before the race, Race Director Terry McLaughlin decided to err on the side of caution and go with the 5K run, 40K bike, 5K run duathlon he hastily concocted earlier in the week.

In the men's race, Reston's Stephen Smith put together the third fastest 5K run (1st leg), second fastest bike split, and fourth fastest 5K run (2nd leg) to claim the win over Glen Allen's Marty Stiegmann, 1:37:25 to 1:38:01. Douglas Marocco, of Montclair, VA, second in last year's triathlon, was third in 1:38:48.
