From the official press release July 13, 2004 Quantico, VA For the Washington Running Report
This Year It's Lucky to Finish in 6,633rd Place
Approximately four and a half hours into the 29th Marine
Corps Marathon (MCM) on October 31, 2004, the 6,633rd finisher
will run under the famed red arch at the MCM finish line. This
individual will forever be recognized as the 300,000th runner to
finish the MCM. Certifying and verifying the timing results will
not allow for this individual to be determined for several
weeks. Once the results are finalized, the finisher will receive
a commemorative shadow box.Annually, the MCM gives out approximately 350 awards. In
addition to the overall winners, runners are recognized in
diverse range of categories that include top male and female
finishers from age groups beginning at 19 and under and, for the
first time, extending to 75 and over.
"The MCM is proud to be able to recognize a wide variety of
people for making such a challenging commitment and in various
noteworthy ways reaching their goals," said
Rick Nealis, Marine Corps Marathon Race
Director. The only major marathon to not offer prize money, the MCM has
evolved into an event run for prestige and honor, earning the
nickname of "The People's Marathon". The Marine Corps Marathon continues a combined tradition of
dedication, sportsmanship and patriotism. Since its inception,
more than 293,000 civilian and military runners from all walks
of life have participated, deservingly earning the event its
nickname "The People's Marathon." The Marine Corps Marathon also
hosts The Washington Post presents: The Healthy Kids Fun Run on
Saturday, October 30 and the Marine Corps Marathon 8K on Sunday,
October 31, immediately following the start of the Marathon. For information about the Marine Corps Marathon, visit the
