Start of the 2004 Spring Forward Kingstowne 5K

Spring Forward 5K "Martials" Its Way
Onto the Alexandria Racing Scene

The Inaugural Spring Forward: the Kingstowne 5K Run/Walk
By Rick & Kathy Freedman
July 24, 2004
Alexandria, VA
For the Washington Running Report

Almost 250 racers came out for the first Spring Forward 5K held at the Kingstowne Center Mall. The event benefited Goodwill of Greater Washington and was sponsored by United Studios of Self Defense, and Kingstowne Family & Cosmetic Dentistry. Their goal was to promote personal and community wellness through the condition of being healthy and sound in mind, body, occupation, and community.

The fastest male runner today was Chris Farley, owner of the specialty shoe store Pacers of Alexandria, who bested the field with a 15:55. In second place, Gregory Holden of Washington, DC ran 23 seconds back in 16:17. Another 25 seconds later Scott Cummings from Lorton finished at 16:42 (photo left).

For the women, Liz Aquino of Springfield broke the tape in 19:02. Jenny Milnarcik of Kingstowne (photo left) finished in 19:24 for second place, and Sushila Nanda ran 20:27 for third.

For just their first time conducting a race, the sponsors did a lot of things well, giving the participants many things to be happy about. The t-shirts were very colorful with the race logo on the front. Food and snacks, including fruit, bagels, and ice cream, were abundant. Demonstrations of various forms and aspects of martial arts were demonstrated on the stage and continued throughout the day. A moon bounce occupied the kids while their parents enjoyed more than 20 exhibitors at the post-race festival with give-aways and more demos. This race clearly "gives back" to the participants.

The course was never flat, though not too punishing. All enjoyed a jaunt around the lake. There were numerous compliments to Holly and Chris of United Studios of Self Defense about the organization of the event, the taiko drummers near the finish line, and the good time had by all.

Pass the word about this gem of a summer 5K.
