Fostering A Love For Running
The National Distance Running Hame of Fame was established in
1997. The Utica, New York home of long distance running honors
legends, retells stories and displays nostalgic items from the
sport's history. The induction ceremony for the Hall of Fame is held on the
second Saturday in July during the Boilermaker 15K Road Race
weekend. This year, three athletes were honored: Don Kardong,
fourth place Men's Olympic Marathon finisher at the 1976
Montreal Games in 2:11:16, running commentator and senior
writer for Runner's World Magazine, and founder of the Lilac
Bloomsday Run in Spokane, WA; Greg Meyer, 1983 winner of the
Boston Marathon with a time of 2:09, world record holder in the
15K and 10 Mile road race distances; and Bob Schul, 1964
Olympic Gold Medalist at 5000 meters and one of five Americans
to have won a Gold Medal in Olympic history. For more information on the National Distance Running Hall of
Fame, see the Web site: www.distancerunning.com
