A full moon on a warm summer's night, a band playing, beer taps flowing liberally and thousands of your oldest, newest and sweatiest best friends all suffused the Rockville city center in the aftermath of the 23rd Rotary Twilight Runfest.

"This is a like a family reunion, a party with everyone you've missed for the past six months," said Edmund Burke, long one of area's top road racers, as he surveyed the festive post-race scene. "All of these people have worked hard and now they're enjoying their accomplishment. And they should."

Burke--with a bent toward the philosophical consistent with his famous namesake--captured the essence of the Washington area's best event. And it should be noted that an injury which prevented Burke from racing, along with a naturally abstemious nature, provided him with a uniquely sober perspective.

For the majority of the crowd--more than 2,000 runners finished the 8K--the racing and camaraderie are part and parcel of the area's oldest and finest Twilight event. Mohamed Awol, a national cross country team member for Ethiopia in 1998 and 2002, kept the racing portion of the evening more than honest with a winning effort of 24 minutes 24 seconds. Awol (29) traveled to the race from his home in the Bronx, NY.

Runner-up Solomon Haile (18), a rising senior at Sherwood High in Sandy Spring, MD, ran with Awol for three miles before fading. Haile, the record-setting national high school indoor and outdoor 5,000 meter champion as a junior, took second in 24:40. Last winter, Haile, running as Solomon Semungase, age 20, won the Jingle All the Way 10K. But his high school coach, Dan Reeks, said that Haile, who arrived from Ethiopia nearly a year ago, has resolved that identity issue and is headed for a big senior year. "He's legitimate," Reeks said.

Abiyot Abebe, also from Ethiopia, was third in 24:59, Jared Abuya, from Kenya, fourth in 25:05, and Robert Wade, from Ireland, fifth in 25:07. Andy Biladeau (21), from Lutz, FL, finished sixth in 25:09 and was the top American.

In photo Cindy Conant (47) of Kensington, MD poses with her daughter Charlotte. Conant ran an excellent 32:53 to win her age group and fourth master overall.

Julie Culley (26), fresh off a seventh-place finish at the U.S. Olympic trials at 5,000 meters, used her residual fitness to dominate the women's race, winning in 26:58. Hirut Mandefro, the runner-up at the Lawyers Have Heart 10K in June, again finished second, this time in 27:48.

"I needed a break after the trials," said Culley, who trains under Matt Centrowitz at American University. "And this seemed like a good place to come back and run hard."

An especially spirited masters competition was led by women's stalwart Alisa Harvey (42), who ran 29:48 and finished sixth overall. Former Virginia Tech all-American Mark Stickley (46) added to his stable of masters wins by handily defeating last year's winner, Andres Wright (41). Stickley ran 26:50 and was 20th overall.
