13th Annual Lawyers Have Heart 10K

It may have been a rare day in June--the sun shone and no rain
fell--but it was just another day at the races for area
stalwarts Chris Banks and Erik Kean (photo left by Alan Penberg).The two former Princeton teammates, who train together and have
traded wins at local races all spring, ran in a pack of four at
halfway but needed to sort out the top two positions with two
miles remaining in the 13th Lawyers Have Heart 10K. This day
belonged to Banks, who ran 31 minutes 10 seconds, to beat Kean
by three seconds. Edmund Burke, 33, from Burtonsville, was third
in 31:29. "Erik surged early in the race, and that kind of broke things
up," Banks explained. "But I was feeling pretty good, so when I
started pushing it with two miles left, I opened up a small gap
and just extended it from there."
Tatyana Maslova, 36, a Russian living in Gaithersburg, employed
a similar strategy, surging at four miles to open a gap on Naoko
Ishibe, 34 (photo left by Alan Penberg), and win the women's
race in 35:24. Ishibe finished second in 35:44."I'm still recovering from injuries, so I'm pleased with today's
race," Ishibe said. "I knew [Maslova] is good, so staying with
her for four miles was encouraging." Jytte Pedersen, 36, from Denmark, finished third in 36:52, one
second ahead of Alisa Harvey. Pederson, in town for a biomedical
conference at NIH in Bethesda, was headed home a few hours after
the race. Alan Raul, co-founder of the race and director emeritis, ran for
the first time in four years. While Raul wouldn't divulge his
finishing time, he pronounced himself "officially getting in
shape--again." Raul said a record of more than 3,300 runners
registered, raising more than $300,000 for the American Heart
Association. "This is a major fundraiser and we're proud of the work we do
for them," Raul said. Maria Spinnler, 41, from Hagerstown, was the first masters
runner and claimed an open award for placing sixth overall in
39:02. Spinnler, who celebrated her 10th wedding anniversary
last week with her coach and husband, Mike, raced eight
consecutive weekends earlier this spring. Laura Freix, 42, from
Centreville, ran 40:45 and won the award as top master.

from Baltimore, ran 34:14 to win the men's masters race.
Berardi, near exhaustion from his effort in the high humidity,
was 12th overall. Ted Poulos, 41, from McLean, was second in
34:35."I totally bonked at the end," Berardi said. "I just wanted it
to be over." Not that everyone felt that way, but like the guy who bangs his
head with a hammer, sometimes the best part for runners on a hot
day is finishing. And then taking an easy run the next day.
