It was a rare day in June: Cool temperatures, clear skies and a new course for the 14th Lawyers Have Heart 10K at the Washington Harbour in Georgetown. And thousands of area runners--2,025 in all, lawyers and non-lawyers alike--took full advantage of the party atmosphere under the Whitehurst Freeway, all to benefit the American Heart Association.

Philippe Rolly, born in France and a former Washingtonian now living in Tuckahoe, NY, broke away from the leading men four miles in and chalked up his fourth Lawyers Have Heart 10K title. Rolly, who also won the St. Patrick's Day 10K in March, broke the tape in 31 minutes 23 seconds. Erik Kean, 26, from Arlington, finished second five seconds back.

"Philippe had a good lead on everyone and seemed to ease on in," Kean said. "I didn't move into second until about six miles."

Nathan Flores, 24, from Quantico, had forced the pace with Rolly and Kyle Smits through the early miles, but faded to third in 31:40. Smits, 25, from Washington, was fourth in 32:07.

Samia Akbar, 22, of Herndon,VA, won the women's race handily in 36:01, more than a minute ahead of runner-up Genevieve Kiley, 29, from Washington (photo left). Akbar, a recent graduate of American University, still trains with her former coach, Matt Centrowitz, and other elite men and women in the area.

Patti Shull, 45, won the women's masters division and finished fourth overall in 37:56. Shull, from Ashburn, is enjoying quite a spring run, adding to her masters wins at St. Patrick's, Pike's Peek, and a second-place effort at Sallie Mae. Laura Freix, 43, from Centreville, was second master and seventh overall in 39:10.

Kristin Barry, 30, from Vienna, had to be the first finisher among those who gave birth within the past six weeks (to a healthy son, Zachary Lawrence, on April 28) with her impressive 15th-place effort in 41:01. Barry competed for her law firm, Collier Shannon, located in the Washington Harbour complex.

In the men's masters division, Chris Chattin, 40, took the lead at five miles and closed with a 5:08 mile to nail down the win and show that, given the proper incentive, old guys can still roll, if not rock.

Betty Blank, 51, from Falls Church, an area racing stalwart, waxed enthusiastic about the weather, the race and life in general after the race: "Is this great or what? I'll always be out here. I love to race."

This year's top ten finishers included some frequent competitors: Rolly won the 2001 (30:49), 2000 (31:34) and 1999 (32:22) men's titles. Erik Kean placed second in 2003 (31:13); Laura Freix finished 8th in 2003 (40:45) and third in 2001 (39:07). Kyle Smits took fifth in 2003 (32:41), fourth in 2002 (32:07) and third in 1999 (33:22). Newlywed Frank Sprtel finished 8th in 2001 (34:27).
