Marine Corps Marathon Announces Transfer
and Deferment Policies

From the official press release
June 17, 2004
Quantico, VA
For the Washington Running Report

The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) has announced the transfer and deferment policies for the 2004 race. The policies allow registered runners unable to participate in the sold-out October 31 marathon to transfer their bib number to another runner seeking entry or defer their entry for a guaranteed spot in the 2005 event.

"The goal is to give as many people as possible the opportunity to run in 'The People's Marathon'," said Rick Nealis, MCM Race Director. "There are always unforeseeable difficulties and the transfer and deferment policies allow runners the flexibility to delay participation until the following year or grant someone else the opportunity to officially run in their place."

To transfer a bib number, registered runners must complete and mail in the MCM transfer form available at www.marinemarathon.com. The form requires the registered runner's information, as well as the information of the person receiving the transferred bib number. The MCM will send a transfer application to the transferee, which must be returned by September 6, 2004 with the $20 transfer fee.

The deferment procedure for registered runners defers a 2004 entry to a guaranteed spot in the 2005 MCM. The deferment does not transfer a 2004 entry fee to 2005. The deferment request form is located at www.marinemarathon.com. Runners who defer will receive an in-training shirt for the 30th Marine Corps Marathon to be held on October 30, 2005. This policy is not available to those runners who deferred a 2003 entry into the 2004 race. Deadline for deferrals is October 1, 2004.

The Marine Corps Marathon continues a combined tradition of dedication, sportsmanship, and patriotism. Since its inception, more than 293,000 civilian and military runners from all walks of life have participated, deservingly earning the event its nickname "The People's Marathon." Runner's World magazine ranks the Marine Corps Marathon among the 10 Best Beginner Marathons in the world.
