This year's Capital One Toucan 10K Run is expected to raise more than $60,000 to help support the children and youth in Alternative House programs. The run benefits Alternative House in its efforts to aid at-risk children, youth, and families and abused, homeless, and runaway youth. Alternative House is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing positive choices for children, youth and families. Founded 32 years ago, it provides:

Safe shelter, food and counseling for abused, homeless and runaway teens;

Free counseling and referrals for youth and families 24 hours a day at 1-800-SAY-TEEN;

A neighborhood drop-in center in the Culmore area of Bailey's Crossroads where youth find positive alternatives to substance abuse and violence;

A van-based outreach program to help homeless and at-risk young people find the resources they need to be safe; and

Neighborhood-based counselors to help young people stay in school and away from drugs and violence.
