Start of the 2004 Capital One Toucan 10K

Capital One Toucan 10K
By James Moreland
June 19, 2004
Vienna, VA
For the Washington Running Report

Just before the race, the Mayor of Vienna decreed the weather perfect for running. The oppressive heat and humidity of the last few days was slacking off, like gas prices, to a saner level. Still, it was hot, hot, hot. Chris Banks and runner-up Simon Flory of Demotte, IN (photo left) agreed that the course was scenic and they enjoyed it. Not recognizing Flory, many of us were surprised to see him neck and neck with a hard- charging Banks at mile four as they raced up the final hill to the finish.

The course starts just off the main drag in quaint Vienna next to the Washington and Old Dominion Trail. The first mile is run through town. It was a fun little roller coaster lollipop tour that killed anyone who went out too fast. The prerequisite to entering the W&OD Trail were three solid hills. The trail was cooler in the shade and water stops abounded.

Though this race is near the center of Washington metro area racing, there were few of the regulars despite cash for the top three overall. There was a nice basket of goodies for the age group winners. The little park with a photogenic railroad car had plenty of post race fruit and water, and music playing at a cheerful level. The pre-race coach warmed runners up before the start.

A pack of about a dozen runners followed the two leaders a respectful couple hundred meters back. Four of the top five women stayed close together through the first five miles before stringing out. Lindsay Goulet of Arlington, VA pulled away to win convincingly in 38:41. Britton Stackhouse of Arlington,VA was second in 39:10. Robin Witlin (photo left)started the race as the fifth place female, moved up to fourth place at the 2 mile mark, and finally moved up to third at the 5 mile mark. She ended up finishing just eight seconds behind Stackhouse. Denise Cardamone of Washington, DC defaulted to the age group winner in 39:33. Fifth place Colleen Post of Fairfax, VA ran a fine 40:30.

Vicki Hurt of Alexandria, VA won the 40-49 division in 44:11. Patricia Donahue, also of Alexandria, won the fifties in an even more impressive 46:30.

After running neck and neck for three quarters of the race, Banks dropped Flory about mile five, cruising home in 32:59. Banks has run closer to 30:50 for 10K and seemed as if he was just out for a training run. Banks has some serious aspirations for the marathon. Little is known about young Flory (22) other than that he was visiting in the area. He has a fine running career ahead of him if he can stay with Banks through five miles. Show money went to Jon Lauder (21) of Oakton, VA who ran alone after the first mile, finishing in a convincing 35:47.

Kevin Patterson-Kemp of Silver Spring, MD won the twenties division, roaring home in 37:38. Vienna teens Doug Shapiro and James Gaughan dueled for the prize in their category. Shapiro earned it 38:12 to 38:33. Dion Omara of Annandale, VA was next in 38:40 to garner the forties trophy. Usually it does not pay to have a nine at the end of your age. Today 39-year-old Michael Marsh of Leesburg, VA took the win in 40:13. Runners were advised that unbeatable Chuck Moeser would be out of town. This left the field wide open for Dick Paterson (57) of Fairfax, VA (photo above) who took the division lead away from James Moreland entering the trail. Second place Ron Greene (seen in background, above) glided by Moreland soon afterward. On the return journey Greene passed a lot of runners but was unable to close the gap on Paterson. Paterson won the division in 41:30 with Greene four seconds back.

Running from his hometown, Ken Quincy won the sixties division in 47:41. Nearly all the runners in the race were from Virginia. Bill Pepelko (70) of Great Falls, VA won his division in 54:29. Surprisingly, another hometown runner, Walt Washburn (81), was registered but did not show. Washburn is a national record holder at the 30K and 20-mile distances and usually runs more than fifty races a year. Today would have been his twelfth 10K of the year.

Proceeds from the race benefit The Alternative House, which provides support for children, youth and families through crisis intervention, counseling and emergency shelter. This race is definitely one to put on your calendar for next year.
