"I was trying my best to keep up with [Kenyan] Eliude Kipchoge and the front pack. We went out so fast. I started to hurt in the end. With a lap to go, all I had to do was run a 60 flat and that's what I did. I knew if I beat Boaz (Cheboiywo) I'd get it. Anytime I run here at Hayward Field, I manage to do something special. It's always special here in Eugene."

Alan Webb continues to build on the success he first experienced in 2004 , when he set personal bests on outdoor tracks for the 800 meters (1:46.53), 1500 meters (3:50.83), mile (3:50.83), and 5000 meters (13:46.31).

At the Nike Prefontaine Classic Meet in Eugene, OR on Saturday, June 4, 22-year-old Alan Webb of Fairfax, VA, placed second in the 5000 meters with a new American Record time of 8:11.48. Eliude Kipchoge of Kenya won the event in 8:07.68 and Boaz Cheboiywo placed third in 8:11.62.

On April 28, at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Webb improved his 5000 meter time to 13:30.25 and finished in first place.

Alan Webb has run some of his best performances at Hayward Field's outdoor track meet stacked with international talent. In 2004, Alan Webb ran the fastest time ever in the men's mile by an American on U.S. soil at the Nike Prefontaine Classic. Webb's winning time of 3 minutes, 50.85 seconds broke Jim Ryun's record set in 1967.

At the Prefontaine Classic on May 27, 2001, a well-paced race and a final lap of 55.3 seconds enabled Alan Webb to run a 3:53.43 in the Bowerman Mile, breaking the national High Sschool record of 3:55.3 that was set by Jim Ryun 36 years earlier. Equally impressive was that Webb finished fifth overall in a star-studded international field...Webb's splits at 400m and 800m were 58.1 and 1:57.8 respectively..."It was the most exhilarating experience of my life," said Webb.
