15th Lawyers Have Heart 10K and 3K Fun Walk
Showdown in Georgetown - Lawyers Take to the Streets
By George Banker June 08, 2005 Washington, DC For the Washington Running Report
The American Heart Association was founded in 1924. The AHA is
the largest voluntary health organization and the largest non-
governmental funding source for cardiovascular disease and
stroke, which eventually kill nearly one million Americans.
The streets of Georgetown will be filled with judges, lawyers,
and law administrators all without cell phones and legal briefs.
There will no meetings in the judge's chambers. The debates
will be with foot power and leg speed. On Saturday, June 11,
2005, the 15th Lawyers Have Heart 10K and 3K Fun Walk will be
held at 8:00 AM, starting and ending at the Washington Harbour. This year's presenting sponsor is StaffWise Legal, Inc. The race
benefits the American Heart Association (AHA). Since the
inaugural race in1991, more than $2.8 million has been raised.
The mission is to reduce disability and death from
cardiovascular disease (CVD) and stroke. By participating, you
will not only strengthen your own heart through exercise, you
will also help to raise funds vital to the educational programs
and research of the AHA. White House Counsel Harriet Miers will serve as the Honorary
Starter. Ms. Miers succeeded Judge Alberto Gonzales in the role
of Counsel to the President in November 2004, having previously
held the positions of Assistant to the President and Deputy
Chief of Staff. "We are honored to have White House Counsel Miers to start our
race, which is a significant event for Washington's legal
community," said Thomas E. Frost, a member of the Lawyers Have
Heart Steering Committee and Executive Vice President, General
Counsel, and Secretary with The Mills Corporation. The registration fee is $35.00 and $10 for kids 12 and under.
If you are unable to run or walk, VOLUNTEERS are
certainly welcome. Call (703) 914-3710, e-mail
Patty.Burke@heart.org. Packet Pick-up and registration begins Thursday, June 10
from 11 AM to 7:00 PM, and Friday, June 11 from 10 AM to 2:00
PM, at The ESPN Zone at 11th & E Streets, NW. Race-day
registration opens at 6:30 am at the Washington Harbour. The flat and fast out-and-back certified course starts and
finishes at 31st and K Streets, NW. The course goes along the
Whitehurst Freeway and then onto M Street (south side) and left
before Foxhall Road onto Canal Road and turns around right
before Reservoir Road (5K mark is after the turn around) and
returns using the same route.
