Lawyers Have Heart 10K

Lawyers Have Heat
By Jim Hage
June 11, 2005
Washington, DC
For the Washington Running Report

With the humidity high and temperatures already approaching 80 degrees prior to the 8 a.m. start, the advice of area weather forecasters seemed superfluous: Venture outside only if you must. Warning duly noted, but for the majority of the 3,760 registrants of the 15th Lawyers Have Heart 10K, the popular pre- summer road race was more than reason enough to brave the elements.

Wilson Komen (photo left), who has been running through the area competition this spring and fresh from beating 50,000 runners and winning the National Race for the Cure one week earlier, made short work of the strong Lawyers field. Komen allowed a pack of seven to join him for the opening two miles, then began to winnow the field by maintaining a relentless pace. By halfway, Komen had established a substantial lead, which he extended throughout the final three miles. He broke the tape in 30 minutes 27 seconds, 53 seconds ahead of Mikhail Khbotov (32), from Russia, who finished second in 31:20. David Berdan (24), from York, PA, took third in 31:25 and last year's winner, Philippe Rolly (32), from Fairfax, was fourth in 31:49.

"I had no problems today," Komen said. "It was hot, but I felt good."

Winning the race and feeling good made Komen doubly unique under the sweltering conditions. Tatyana Chulakh (23, photo), who lives and trains with Khbotov and the rest of the Russian contingent in Gaithersburg, won the women's race in a time of 35:34; but even she wouldn't admit to feeling especially good. Her time was the third fastest winning time. Charlotte Thomas set the standard with 34:42 in 1992. Genevieve Kiley (30), from Arlington, was second, 2:11 back in 37:45.

"I saw no other women," Chulakh said through an interpreter. "The weather was bad but this was a good training run for me."

Chulakh arrived in the United States two weeks earlier and will race on the roads until she returns to college in Kazan, where she will compete in track, cross country, and road racing (beyond the reach of NCAA rules and regulations).

Runner-up Kiley (photo left) continued her strong spring (20th at Cherry Blossom, 15th at Sallie Mae and fourth at Capitol Hill, all progressively faster performances) by holding off third-place finisher Alisa Harvey (39), from Manassas.

"I passed [Harvey] at two miles and she immediately tucked in right behind me," Kiley said. "I thought, 'Gee, that was dumb of me.'"

That strategy turned out not to matter significantly, as Kiley pulled away in the second half. Kiley moved to the area last fall from Park City, UT, toting an impressive resume that includes a 49th-place finish at the 2004 Olympic trials marathon in St. Louis.

Despite the fine performances, it is the heat for which this race will be remembered. After two consecutive cool runnings, the oppressive conditions wrecked havoc upon the field. More than a dozen runners received medical attention in an air-conditioned bus provided by the city's emergency services, and six were transported to George Washington University Hospital with varying degrees of heat exhaustion.

This is all a sober reminder that runners are tough but hardly indestructible. With the bulk of the summer still to come, be careful out there.
