3rd Annual Warhill 5K Run for Kids Club Preschool

A Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix Event
By Rick Platt
June 5, 2006
Williamsburg, VA
For the Washington Running Report

Tracy Bright (23) and Jennifer Quarles (34) both of Williamsburg, VA had a classic battle down the finishing stretch at the 3rd annual Warhill 5K Run for Kids Club Preschool at the Warhill District Park Sports Complex in Williamsburg. Bright had been leading for almost 3 miles, with Quarles in close pursuit, until Quarles took the lead with less than a quarter-mile to go. However, Bright used her William and Mary track speed (she graduated last December) to out kick Quarles for the win, 18:22.4 to 18:23.3. Both were 30 seconds under the previous race record, an 18:52 run by Bright (then Tracy Williams) in 2004. It was the final Colonial Road Runners for Bright for awhile, as she and husband Derek Bright (a captain in the Air Force) will be off to San Antonio, moving in July.

The men's race featured a win by Marshal Miller (20) a W&M student who competes with the Team Blitz training group, featured in the most recent issue of the Washington Running Report. Miller won easily in 16:49 over Michael Mann, (37) of Hampton (17:25), as Steve Chantry (51) of Williamsburg, comfortably in second place, had to slow down the final mile due to a hamstring strain. For Mann, it was the one-year anniversary of running with a complete lung. Several days after the 2005 Warhill race, Mann underwent exploratory surgery to check on a suspicious lump in his lung. It turned out to be cancerous, and he had one lobe (20% of his lung capacity) removed, followed by chemotherapy throughout the summer. Mann has made a remarkable comeback and recovery, and is leading the 2006 Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix point standings.

113 finishers in 5K run/walk. 23 finishers in one mile fun run/walk.
