The Kentlands Community Foundation announced today that it will
be sponsoring a 12-week walking training program geared for
seniors aged 60 and over. The program, called "Got FIT" (Feet
in Training), is open to all qualified seniors located in the
Greater Gaithersburg area and will run from late June through
mid-September, culminating with the participants walking in the
Kentlands/Lakelands 5K Walk on September 1. Participants will
meet weekly throughout the program for a team training walks
and to listen to area health specialists speak about steps
seniors can take to live a healthier lifestyle. "As the organization responsible for serving as the educational
resource on new urbanism and walkable communities, the
Kentlands Community Foundation wanted to make its biggest event
of the year, the Kentlands/Lakelands 5K, even more accessible
to our area seniors than ever before. The Got FIT program is
designed to do just that," said Foundation Chair Clyde Horton. The registration fee for the program will cost just $10, and
will also include the participant's registration fee for the
actual 5K Walk at more than a 50% discount. Participants will
each receive a pedometer, T-shirt, and water bottle to use in
their training. Enrollment will be limited to the first fifty
(50) registrants, and participants will be required to provide
a note from their doctors confirming their satisfactory health
status. The opening Training session will take place the 3rd Saturday
of June. Walking training sessions will take place every
Saturday morning 8:00-9:30 am through the summer and start/end
at one of the program's key sponsors, Elite Performance
Physical Therapy, located off Kentlands Boulevard in Kentlands
Square. Interested residents can pick up a registration form for the
Got FIT program at the Kentlands Clubhouse, the Lakelands
Clubhouse, Elite Performance Physical Therapy, and the Upcounty
Senior Center and online.
