For the Washington Running Report

5K Run Limited to first 1,000 people who register

The Kentlands Community Foundation announces that online registration will open on June 15, 2007 for its 14th Annual Kentlands/Lakelands 5K Run, Walk and Kids Fun Runs, set for Saturday, September 1st. 2007. Online registration is available through the Foundation's web site at a discount registration rate through mid-August. Mail-in registration will begin in mid-July.

While more than 1,500 participants have registered for the community event in the past, the 5K Run will be limited to the first 1,000 registered participants this year. "We're still offering unlimited participation in the 5K Walk and Kids Fun Runs, but we felt that limiting participation to the first 1,000 5K Run registrants would be the best way to assure the highest level of safety and provide runners with the most accurate race results, too," noted Steve Solbeck, Race Director. What has become a community tradition as part of Labor Day Weekend, the 5K event will feature a newly-designed course this year, giving participants the opportunity to experience the best in new urbanist neighborhoods as they wind through both the Kentlands and Lakelands. As in the past, the event will offer not only a 5K Run and Walk, but two (2) Kids Fun Runs and its well-renowned post-race Festival in the newly-designed Market Street Plaza, located in the business section between Market Street East and Market Street West, and just north of Main Street.

"This is the Foundation's biggest event of the year. It allows us to bring folks together for a fun, family-oriented activity, showcase our unique walkable communities, and make a positive difference in the lives of local families in need when we share 50% of the Race proceeds with another local charity, the Dolores C. Swoyer Camp Scholarship Fund," added Foundation Chair Clyde Horton.

NOTE: New Parking Restrictions on Race Day September 1, 2007
It is important to note that the new course map designates areas where area Kentlands, Lakelands residents and guests will not be able to park on race day, September 1, 2007. See attached map of new race course and parking restrictions.

The new route gives greater equal representation of the Kentlands and Lakelands neighborhoods. The Lakelands route will pass by the: Lakelands Clubhouse, Lakelands Park Middle School, the new synagogue, Shaare Torah, and several of the Lakeland's beautiful parks. The new course also winds through many of the Kentlands key civic buildings and spaces, giving participants the chance to experience the award winning community.

The start and finish of the race has changed to Main Street, where various local merchants have their shops and businesses. The Kentlands Community Foundation hopes that this will help to further strengthen partnerships with Main Street merchants in the future. Race Sponsorship forms are available on the Foundation's web site.
