Start of the 2008 Lawyers Have Heart 10K

Hot, but Happy

Lawyers Have Heart 10K Hosts Another Big Crowd

You say it's your birthday? It was for Jackie O'Neil, and she celebrated her 77th with her husband and more than 3,000 of her sweatiest friends at the 18th Lawyers Have Heart 10K, a warm and muggy affair in Georgetown. "It's a perfect way to spend the morning," said O'Neil, who, to no one's surprise won her age group in 1 hour 17 minutes 3 seconds. O'Neil, who started running only about 25 years ago, ran her fifth Lawyers run--or so she thought.

"I've lost track," she said. "But this one was hot, so hot I felt dizzy at the end. Quite frankly, I didn't put makeup on this morning so I could dump water on my head. My hair got all wet, too, but I didn't care."

Steven Crane (26), from Silver Spring, (in photo) added another win to his running resume in what has been a fine year. He won the Van Metre 5 Mile Run in March and the Germantown 5-Miler in May. In between, Crane ran a personal best 49:41 at the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile run. At Lawyers, his fitness showed again, as Crane pulled away in the first mile, covered in a relatively slow 5:20. "I picked it up after that," he said, "and running five-minute pace felt pretty comfortable." Abiyot Abebe (20), from Silver Spring, ran alone nearly the entire way and finished second in 32:14. Jason Dwyer (28), from Silver Spring, was third in 32:43 and four-time Lawyers winner Philippe Rolly (35), from Fairfax, was fourth in 32:50.

Genet Gebregiorgis (in photo) sprinted away from her Ethiopian countrywoman Hirut Mandefro to win the women's race in the final half mile, just as she did to win the Pike's Peek 10K in April. Gebregiorgis (33) broke the tape in 35:57 and Mandefro (22) was six seconds back.

"Next time, I catch her, maybe," Mandefro said somewhat unconvincingly. "We'll see."

Marine Corps Marathon winner Kristen Henehan, coming off an unsatisfying performance at the Olympic trials marathon in April, took third at Lawyers in 36:25, one second ahead of Pacers teammate Lindsay Wilkins (30).

Mark Stickley (45, photo), from Winchester, VA, finished sixth overall and won the masters race in 33:51, ahead of 1984 Olympic marathoner John Tuttle (49), who ran 35:06. Last month the tough-as-nails Stickley ran 2:34:17 in the Vermont City Marathon. "The hardest part at this point is just staying healthy enough to train, healthy enough to race," said Stickley, a father of four. "It doesn't come as easily as it used to." Liliana Baron (49), from Potomac, (in photo below) ran 40:27 to win the women's masters race, finishing just ahead of Ofelia Perotti (51), from Alexandria, who ran 41:00.

D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty (37) ran 41:22 and finished 14th in his age group.
