Weather Factors into Race Results
By James Moreland June 28, 2008 Ashburn, VA For the Washington Running Report
Results are preliminary.
In photo, runners charge to the finish line. After the blazing heat we have experienced this June, could
there be any doubt about global warming. Do you like it humid?
We can provide that too. The first year (2006) we were so
inundated (the wettest day of the year) that the race was
canceled. Last year was a normal pleasant, even cool, June and
times for the fast two loop course were pretty fast. This
helped enlarge the field to more than 1,000 finishers and
hundreds of walkers. This June has been a tester for the heat
and humidity challenged runners. Even with an enhanced elite
field, times were across the board slower than normal.
Virtually no one ran faster than they did at last year's race. The skies darkened shortly after the finish of the race. The
classic rock band (The Sock Monkeys) was playing tunes and
runners were refreshing themselves with plentiful food and
drink. Red, Hot, and Blue gave the heat exhausted runners some
great chow and Samuel Adams was waiting in the roped
off "adult" section to help cool down the runners. There was
ample cold water and juice for all the runners. At the finish
line most of us grabbed a cool drink from a helpful volunteer
before collapsing into a chair to remove our ChampionChip. On the way home, runners were treated to a fierce light show.
Fortunately, there was little rain. Note that the average June
has six thunderstorms. We have already had sixteen this year. There were a few glitches in the scoring of the race. Some
runners mysteriously had a halfway (2-mile) split but no
finishing time. Some of the runners may have decided to hit the
refreshments early but clearly some of the times were not
recorded correctly, as yet. The results are being updated and
remain unofficial as we collect more data. Race Director Cathy Pugsley of Potomac River Running announced that "there will be
a post-race celebration/party hosted by ING on Friday, July 11 -
- sponsored by Original Steakhouse, some good food and a thanks
to everyone who volunteered and participated. As the wind storm
canceled most of the awards ceremony, we will be holding it
there. HS Scholarship winners will also receive their checks,
and ING will be doing the drawing for the 42" Plasma TV (Folks
who did not get to enter the raffle will have one more chance
to do so that night before they pull the winning ticket."
Steven Crane (26) of Silver Spring, MD is quietly confidant.
With five overall wins in the last thirty days, he does expect
to win. His last win was two weeks ago at the Lawyers Have
Heart 10K in 31:22 over runner-up Abiyot Abebe (21) of Silver
Spring, MD. Crane had a bunch of overall wins earlier in the
year as well but he did stumble once against Abebe, racing a
sub par 32:19 at the Stop the Silence. Bart Borghuis (32) of Arlington, VA was runner-up at the Battle
of the Boulevards (32:16) to Crane in May. Robert Wade (26) of
Arlington, VA had finishing a mere second behind Crane at the
Remembrance 5K in late May after beating Borghuis at the
Capitol Hill Classic 10K 32:15 to 32:22. Wade (in photo) had
been lurking at nearly all of Crane's big races. By the halfway point, Crane had separated from the field with a
nasty 9:40 split. That was well ahead of the pace set by last
year's winner Eric Post, who finished in 20:28. Still, nobody
expected to be traveling the second loop, while cooking in the
slick-skinned humidity, at a faster pace. Crane covered the final two miles in 10:06 to set the new
standard in 19:46. Abebe battled the whole way for second in
20:06, holding off Bart Borghuis (20:15). Last year's runner-up
Dustin Whitlow (22) of Ashburn, VA settled for seventh in
21:30.
Nobody had any chance of catching Darrell General's masters
record of 21:28, fourth overall from last year. The first
master was 16th place this year. We old folks do not care all
that much for the heat. That said, the first master was 50-year-
old Mark Malander of Oak Hill, VA in 23:27. This is by far the
slowest pace for Malander since he took over the grandmaster
Runner Rankings crown this spring in the shortest race
he
has run. Top ranked Bill Joyce (60-64) offered only a sardonic smile
around the 1.5 mile mark as he dropped. Jason Page (63) of
Hamilton, VA was at that time in second place. Page had
filleted Joyce last year 24:25 to 26:19 but Joyce had a
sensational 2008, improving his Lawyers Have Heart 10K from two
weeks ago more than three minutes from last year to 39:23.
After he dropped, Page eased up on the reins and by his own
admission, "just finished" the second half. He easily bested
the field with 27:04, a far cry from last year's race. For the women, last year Linda Foley (45) of Herndon, VA led
everyone, including four other masters women 27:00 of faster.
Her time was 25:23. This year the top master woman was Tonya
Stotler (41) of Leesburg, VA (in photo) in 29:13. Remember,
older folks do not like the heat and humidity so much. Lining up at the ChampionChips mats was some Olympic quality
talent this year. Keira Carlstrom (23) of Oakton, VA had
personal bests of sub 4:40 mile and 9:18 for 3000M. Samia Akbar
(26) of Herndon, VA had a PR 3000M of 9:11 and a 32:42 10K as
well as a sub six minute pace marathon 2:34:14 at New York in
2006. As Bob Moore started the race, Akbar was off building an
insurmountable lead. She just missed catching the tenth place
male by a second in a phenomenal 22:28. Carlstrom stormed home
in 23:16. Third place Emily Gousen (22) of Arlington, VA was
still close at the half but wilted a bit in the second round to
finish in 24:01. Laura Turner (28) of Washington, DC thought she was fifth woman
and elite runners usually know their pace, place, and pecking
order exactly. This time she nestled into fourth with 25:04 as
the top seven women all broke 26:00.
