Washington Running Report

On a cool overcast morning course records were broken at the 2001 Kentlands/Lakelands 5K in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Troy Harry (left) of Fairfax, VA broke the course record by 20 seconds finishing in a time of 15:26. Harry blazed through mile one in 4:50. He was trailed by Michael Ryan of Arlington, VA who finished second in a time of 15:45 and Rob Magin of Gaithersburg, MD who finished third in a time of 16:14.

Naoko Ishibe (below - click here for her post race interview) of Silver Spring, MD broke her previous course record in a time of 17:14. She was followed by Patty Fulton also of Silver Spring, who ran the course in 17:39, and Kim Chenen of Gaithersburg, MD, who finished third in 19:51.

First Masters men finisher Dan Lawson was clocked in at 16:21 and was fourth overall. First Masters woman was Beth McCann of Falls Church, VA in 20:00. She was the fifth overall woman finisher.

Over 1,000 participants took part in the 5K Race and Kids Fun Run. With a strong emphasis on youth fitness, several hundred children took part in the quarter-mile Kids Fun Run which was started in waves.

The 5K runners received a pre-race warmup with help from The Sergeant's Program (www.sarge.com). Post race festivities and the awards ceremony took place in Kentland's Market Square. Runners feasted on pizza, bagels and yogurt while the kids scaled the climbing wall.

The Montgomery County Road Runners provided the race results and timing.
