There is only one race to put on your calendar for Sunday, March 14, 2004--the 16th St. Patrick's Day 10K. The race starts at 9:30 am on Pennsylvania Avenue at 13th Street. It's time to gather your family and friends to get registered and join in the excitement. The St. Patrick's Day 10K holds a traditional place in the metropolitan area and kicks off the spring racing season.

Full race details and links to online registration and a printable entry form can be found on the race Web site. The charity partner is Special Olympics District of Columbia. New this year, the packet pick-up and registration will be located at the Marriott at Metro Center, 775 12th St., NW, between G and H Streets. Take the Red, Blue, or Orange Line to Metro Center.

Fleet Feet of Adams Morgan will conduct a Runners Expo during the pick-up, and will be open on March 12 from 12:00 noon to 6:00 pm, and on Saturday, March 13 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.

A free, noncompetitive kids fun run, the Leprechauns Leap, will take place immediately after the start of the 10K. No registration necessary--just show up and run!

Post-race entertainment includes an exhibition of Irish dancing by the O'Neill-James School of Irish Dancing.

Some highlights and quotes from past races:

On March 13, 1998, Bennett Beach of Bethesda, MD, finished fourth overall in 33:36. Five years later, on March 15, 2003, Beach finished 3rd in age group 50-54 in 37:46. Beach is one of the area's consistent runners and the only person who has completed all 31 Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Milers. In 1973, he finished in 1:01:11 and last year he finished in 1:02:15, and 23 of his finishing times were under an hour.

"I had a tough time, the first 5K was pretty slow. After I was with Edmund Burke and Ray Pugsley, I was scared about Ray. I saw that he was with the Enclave and very fast. Edmund went fast after mile four, I said, "Oh my God". I just stayed with him. I went faster after mile five, they could not follow me," stated Philippe Rolly of Team Pacers, the 2001 winner (30:51).

Two-time winner Casey Smith tied the 1989 record (35:42) last year (photo left by George Banker, as she approached the tape in 2003). The front line will rock as Pacers teammates Sharon (Servidio) Lemberger (5th place 2003-36:29) and Heather Hanscom (3rd place 2003-36:00) and the 2003 Marine Corps Marathon winner and an Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier, line up to challenge Smith.

The three-time masters winner and event record holder (32:19) Jim Hage will return. The other three-time masters winner, Chuck Moeser, will give chase. Dan Lawson and David Webster will be on hand to give them a good run. The 2003 masters division winners: Hage 1st-33:13, Moeser 2nd-33:30; Lawson 3rd-34: 57; and Webster 9th-36:18.

There will be opportunities for personal challenges and to test your performance level. There have been a few setbacks with inclement weather over the years, but you need not stay indoors any longer. What will it take to get you to register? Maybe the luck of the Irish will be with you!

There will be a few match ups on the streets of Washington which will bring good competition to town. Who will be on that day and who will be off? One exciting element about the St. Patrick's Day race, you never know who may show up. Locate your shamrock and put the finishing touches on your training. Spring is here!
