Racing the St. Patrick's 10K in 2005
Washington, DC - The lads and the lassies are shaping up for the family celebration on Saturday, March 12, 2005, the color of the day will be green. The 17th Annual St. Patrick's Day 10K will start at 9:30 am. There will be a noncompetitive 1K Leprechaun Leap for the wee people (no entry fee and medals to all finishers).

The $25 registration fee is in effect until March 11, 2005. On-line registration is available at Registration. On race day the fee goes to $30.

In-person registration (NEW LOCATION) will be held on Friday, March 11, 2005, 11:00 am - 3:00 pm, at New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, 1313 New York Avenue, NW (13th & H Streets) or on race day, and beginning at 7:00 am and lasting until 9:15 am. On race day, please allow the time to get to the start line; it is a four-block walk to the start on Pennsylvania Avenue between 12th and 13th Streets.

The charitable partner is Special Olympics DC. The mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition for all children and adults with developmental disabilities.

Merchandise awards will be given to the top ten overall male and female finishers. Also, the top three finishers in five-year age groups.

The USATF certified course is flat and fast and is the season opener for the racing community. Last year 4,412 finishers completed the 10K. In the first year, 30% of the finishers were females. Last year there were 50% women along with the first sub- 35-minute win, by Heather Hanscom of Team Pacers of Old Town Alexandria, with a time of 34:12.

"I wanted to run in the low 34:00 range, ideally I would have like to break thirty-four minutes. I was pleased and I raced as well as I could. My legs were a little weary from all of the mileage and training, so I was happy I ran as hard and fast as I did," Hanscom stated last year.

Casey Smith of Arlington, VA., two-time winner (2002-35:57, 2003- 35:42) and former co-record holder will be making her way to the start line. She was the runner-up in 2004 with a 35:31. Will she become the first female to collect three wins?

Captain Mary Kate Bailey, U.S. Marine Corps, the 2004 winner of the 29th Marine Corps Marathon and the second active Marine to have won that event. She will be in the mix.

Philippe Rolly of Fairfax, Va., three-time winner and record holder (1999-30:27,2001-30:51, 2004-30:48) will be attempting the first ever four-time win.

Rolly stated last year, "After two miles I wasn't sure that I could follow them (Michael Wardian, Glen Mays, Kyle Smits)) and I had to fight a headwind. I just focused on Michael and at the 5K I wanted to pass him but he was pushing. I wanted to have a good race and expected to run sub-31 minutes, a tough race. I'm not fast as the end but I am a good kicker."

Mark Malander, of Oak Hill, VA., the defending masters winner (33:52) will be facing off against three-time masters winner, Chuck Moeser of Team Pacers (1993-33:45, 1996-33:32, 1997- 32:41). The masters record was set by three-time masters winner, Jim Hage with a 32:19 (2001).

Patti Shull of Potomac River Running, a three-time masters winner set the record in 1999 (37:12). She was the first master in the race history to go under 38 minutes.

Back in 2003, Hedy Marque of Alexandria, VA, now 87, ran 1:10:22. She holds American records for age group 75-79 at distances of 8K, 15K, and 10 miles. Is there another record to be captured?

The race has a tradition of offering some the area's top competition. It will be a good day to chase after a personal best time or just to run for fun. It does not matter what you will be looking for; it will be there. The local athletes are lining up:
