The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) announced today a new 10K race
to be held in conjunction with the annual 26.2-mile event
Sunday, October 29, 2006. The new 10K will utilize the same
start and finish line as the MCM and replace the previous MCM
8K. Runners of all ages are invited to participate in the 6.2-
mile race. Online registration opens at midnight eastern time
(00:00:01) April 1, 2006 at
www.marinemarathon.com. "A 10K is not a particularly unique distance for runners," said
Rick Nealis, MCM Race Director. "The new MCM 10K breaks the mold
because participants will experience the same wonderful
amenities as the marathoners, tens of thousands of cheering
spectators, great volunteer support, and energy unmatched in any
other 10K." The new MCM 10K starts at 9:00 AM, just minutes after marathon
runners begin their race. The course winds its way from the
Arlington Memorial Bridge start to the Pentagon parking lot,
through the sights and sounds of Crystal City, and returning to
cross the legendary finish line at the Marine Corps War
Memorial. Registration is $45 and includes a commemorative
ChampionChip, goodie bag, race materials included bib and race
program, and MCM 10K mock neck shirt. Finishers will receive a
medal and plenty of post-race replenishment in the hospitality
tent. The new MCM 10K is limited to a race field of 5,000; so
sign up early to ensure a spot! The new MCM 10K will partner with the RacePacket Grand Prix
Race Series to welcome local runners to the event. The
RacePacket Grand Prix Series has been held each year
since 1997 and consists of 12 selected races held in the
Washington, DC area. Runners gain points based upon their
relative finish in each of the races with recognition awarded to
those runners with the highest point totals in the overall and
age group categories. "Being a part of a race series will attract top runners from the
area to this important new race," said Robert Platt, publisher
of RacePacket magazine. "The Marines produce a quality
event, and the Grand Prix Series is pleased to be a
partner with the new MCM 10K." Runners in the Grand Prix Series must register for the
new MCM 10K on the MCM website. Voted "Best Marathon for Families" by Her Sports
Magazine, the Marine Corps Marathon continues a combined
tradition of dedication, sportsmanship and patriotism. Since its
inception, more than 300,000 civilian and military runners from
all walks of life have participated, deservingly earning the
event its nickname "The People's Marathon."
The 31st Marine Corps Marathon will be held on October 29, 2006.
Rolling Registration opens on May 17th, 2006 at noon EST. Visit
