Representing the Athena Track Club four Metro area women
brought home National titles, and pending American and World
Records from the 2007 USA Masters Indoor Track & Field
Championships held at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center
in Boston, Mass.
Joan Hunter, a 43-year-old mother of seven from Purcellville,
VA won National titles in the 400 & 800 meters - age group 40-
44 and anchored relay teams to a pending a World Indoor Record
in the 40-49 age group in the 4x400 meter relay and an American
Indoor Record in the 4x800 meter relay - age 30 and older. Joan
was born in DC and attended James Madison High School, UVA, and
WVU. A former state champion she took up track racing seriously
again in 2006. Joan and her husband Marc, (a former US Olympic
trials participant in the 5000 meters) are planning to adopt an
8th child from China later this year. The Hunter children are
all home schooled.
Terri Rath, also 43, of Ashburn, VA was a member of the same
World record breaking 4x400 meter team, running an impressively
fast third leg which contributed to an overall time of 4:19.21.
This breaks down to fewer than 65 seconds per runner. Terri is
a relative newcomer to track and field. Last year's USA indoor
championships were her first major competition. Dropping down
in distance this year, Terri finished 3rd in the 200 meters -
age group 40-44 and 5th in the 400 meters.
Running in her first National Championships for the team, 39-
year-old Charmaine Roberts made an impressive debut. Against a
very competitive field, Roberts finished 3rd in the 400 meters -
age group 35-39 and recorded a personal best of 2:25.97 to
finish 2nd in the 800 meters. The baby of the team rounded off
an excellent weekend with a pending American Record in the
4x800 meters relay - age group 30-39 and a pending American
Club Record in the 4x400 meters.
Completing the local foursome, Julie Hayden (47) of Ashburn, VA
gained her first two American records since becoming a US
Citizen in August. Hayden joined Hunter and Roberts in the
4x800 meter relay for a pending American Indoor Record in the
40-49 age group and ran on Athena's 30 years and older team to
earn a pending American Club Record in the 4x400 meter relay.
Individually, there was stiff competition for Hayden in the 800
meter and mile with her own Athena teammates taking National
titles in the 45-49 age group. Hayden finished 3rd in each of
these events.
Defending the Athena Track Club 4x400 meter relay title for 40
and older at the Penn Relays, April 27 is the next item on the
running agenda for these four moms. It is all part of a bigger
plan for National competition in Maine in August and the World
Athletic Championships in Italy in September 2007. The athletes
are all actively seeking sponsorship and can be contacted at
