Fourth Annual Scope It Out 5K

Cherry Blossoms Signal the Coming Springtime
By James Moreland
March 30, 2008
Washington, DC
For the Washington Running Report

Racers cruise across the ChampionChip timing mats.

The Fourth Annual Scope It Out 5K Run/Walk for Colon Cancer Awareness hit the jackpot as the cherry blossoms in West Potomac Park were in full bloom. The worthy cause of protecting against this very treatable disease held during National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month raised more than $100,000 this year. That is more than half again the $185,000 that was raised in the first three years.

This is the tourist side of town and though the weather bolted back down to near freezing chased away by a bold March wind and the seventies of last week were history, the course was lined with tourists acting a very realistic part of race spectators.

Saturday's National Marathon had the city prepared for runners in shorts racing about the city. Parking is tough in West Potomac Park when the Cherry Blossoms are in bloom; note that for next week's Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile, which will feature Colleen de Reuck. She was last spotted here winning the race in 1998 in 51:16, a time listed as the world record. (Some insist that a women's only race [start] is necessary for that title. De Reuck turns forty-four on April 14 and will be taking a shot at the masters world record.

Today's race featured contestants from last month GW Birthday 10K. Then third place Steven Crane of Silver Spring, MD was the winner here today in 15:01, which befits the 31:15 time he raced in February. The top three runners all were listed with that time. (The Scope It Out 5K course record was set in 2005 by John Henwood of New York in 14:43 in a tight battle with the top three runners all faster than fifteen minutes.)

However, on the trip back today, racers could see the highly ranked Crane was dogged the whole way by a determined Bert Rodriguez of Arlington, VA (in photo). He made the race a contest until the final yards of the run, coming home in 15:08. Rodriguez was pleased with his time versus his seventh place time of 32:10 in February. He noted humbly the Crane had spent the week moving to new digs and might be a little tired. That might explain closer but the fast time was all earned by Rodriguez. It is his third year in the runner-up spot. Meanwhile, Robert Wade of Arlington, VA, who had been declared the winner in February's three way time tie, struggled a bit and crossed in third with 15:34. Fourth place was a rare appearance from Wilson Komen. Komen a former Ranked Runner champion and a 2:17:00 marathoner ran in no man's land for an easy 15:52 jaunt.

Springtime means the reappearance of Tatianna Chulakh of Gaithersburg, MD. The diminutive waif looked as if she had muscled up a little during the off season as she jetted away from the competition, easily winning in 16:34. Last year she set the event record in 16:24 taking the lead in the final mile and winning by four seconds. Runner-up Keira Carlstorm of Oakton, VA (in photo) churned out some steady and fast miles, racing home in 17:13. Ten seconds a mile slower, Hirut Mandfro of Takoma Park, MD had a fine 17:45 for third. Barb Fallon Wallace of Alexandria, VA was fourth in a time that often wins smaller races - 18:22.

Leaving the house this morning, Win Persina, who turned 48 on Saturday, was asked if she would win the masters. That seemed reasonable as she had won her age group in 2005 and was second master. The next year she trounced her tormentor in 19:49 and won it all. Her response was, "only if Martha Merz isn't there." A lot of masters runners have sung that refrain. Merz won last year in 18:13, the event masters record. This year at forty-five, she settled in at 18:57 for another comfortable win. Persina was second age group in 20:06. After getting off to a slow start, she moved past a bunch of runners.

The second master and 40-44 age group winner was Rebecca Nathan of Arlington, VA. At 19:13, she let Merz know it would not be wise to relax too much. Before the race, Tami Graf of Lusby, MD was asking what the age group would be. When she was told it was five year she smiled and said, "Ten year is fine as long as the have a 70 and older group." In fact, she dominated that division. She lowered her 28:57 Best of 2008 time on a fast AS Valentine's Day course to 28:24 today to easily win.

Many of the faster runners seemed to think the course was a little slow today. The race is pancake-flat and the wind was mild, allowing the cooler temperature to not be a factor. Masters Champion Andres Wright won in 16:20 last year. So he could not break his event record today, settling for 16:28. Greg Cauller (48) of York, PA was next in 16:52 with the third highest age graded performance, a hair ahead of Crane for top male.

Truly the race did slow a little returning across the Kutz Bridge about 800 meters from the finish. The narrow road was filled to capacity by runners mobbing the scene in both directions. Spectators manned the sidewalks. Last year's 50-54 winner James Moreland of Gaithersburg, MD had an easy time of it with all the titan grandmasters racing at 55-59. They were led by Chuck Moeser in 17:08.

Moreland inspired more by the lack of Moeser this year was dueling with Herb Tolbert of Gaithersburg, MD. (In photo, Moreland starts off too fast alongside masters runner-up Rebecca Nathan). Tolbert (61) was making his fourth come back, this time after serious surgery in the fall. Dodging his way across the bridge Moreland lost his focus and the seesaw battle was over. Tolbert pulled away and caught third grandmaster Michael Cannon (50) at the wire in 20:34. Paul Bousel won it all in 19:20 and moves to 55-59 next year. Meanwhile, Moreland coming off a 20:27 5K on Saturday was determined not to die too much. In this case, every second counted as John McMackin (56), who was third last year in 20:05, was making a charge. He fell just short in 20:52 to Moreland's 20:45. By ChampionChip time the difference was a mere three seconds.

The Lou Shapiro racing machine mowed down another record with a swift 21:09 finish. Last year Robbins had won the division in 22:09. Older and wiser Robbins moved over to the 70-74 division to set the record in 22:59. Extra gravy for this top ranked runner, he took down Skip Grant's Best of 2008 time of 23:05 set the first day of the year.

We added a new category. With so many runners in their first race, we set an award listing for the fastest novice runner. Kevin Garzon (16) of Rockville, MD was tops in 17:38. Jay Ann Ges (40) of Burke, VA was best in 24:24. With a chip time of 22:05 she will need to seed herself closer to the starting line.

After crossing the finish line, there was bagels, banana, and beverages - the three Bs of race recovery. There were lots of random awards and bragging rights for the top three in five year age groups came with a nice little gift certificate.

In Photo below, Dante Morales (17) liberates with gusto Neal Darmody's teen event record set in 2006 (17:01) with a scintillating 16:13. The next two runners were a mere two seconds behind.
