Lawyers Have Heart 10K

Join the Lawyers ... Run With Heart
By George Banker
Wednesday, May 28, 2003
Washington, DC
For the Washington Running Report

On Saturday, June 14, 2003 at 8:00 am, a Washington tradition will continue with the 13th Lawyers Have Heart 10K, presented by Westlaw. The race is a benefit for the American Heart Association (AHA). Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of all Americans. Someone dies from CVD every 33 seconds; every 3.3 minutes someone dies from a stroke. The AHA has a goal to reduce coronary heart disease and risk by 25 percent. The race raised over $220,000 last year.

The Washington Harbour, 3000 K Street, NW, Washington, DC, will come alive as nearly 3,500 runners and walkers take part in the 10K run and the Fun Walk (8:05 a.m.). This is the only event that showcases the legal community. The race promotes athleticism and competition for runners of all levels, from the beginner to the experienced.

"At mile four, I made my move. I do a lot of track and it's the best tool for a fast finish. I had fun today. At the collegiate level I put so much stress on myself and I forget that I started for fun. It's like business in Division I track. It feels very good to win and that's why I train. The longer I go, the better I feel," stated 2002 winner, Georgetown student, Mike Smith (30:27).

"Mike dropped the hammer at mile four, he looked back like he was taunting us. I could not catch Mike, and I could sense his energy. It was fun, and I like to compete, but I felt I could have ran better," stated second place finisher (30:37), James Madison graduate, Ben Cooke.

"I went out pretty relaxed and I wanted to do negative splits. At mile two I was 11:14 and mile three 16:52. I ran hard in the beginning. The course was not as flat as I thought. I like the out and back courses - the crowds help out on the way back," said 2002 winner (35:38), Heather Hanscom (Team Pacers), a 2001 graduate of James Madison.

Online registration is available through the race Web site, www.runlhh.org. The registration fee is $25.00 through May 31st, $32.00 June 1st through June 13th, $35.00 on race day. The fee for children 12 and under is $10.00

Awards will be presented to the top six males and females; and the top five masters division finishers. The top three males and females in the following divisions: 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79 and 80 and up.

The top male and female will fly away with airline tickets from JetBlue good for anywhere within the continental United States. The top male and female masters finishers will receive one-year memberships to Sports Club/LA.

Awards will be presented to the top three male and female finishers in the following categories: lawyers, legal secretaries, legal assistants, law librarians, administrators, and law students. There will be awards to the top three teams in the following divisions: large (over 50) and small law firms, government and corporations.

The 2003 race objectives:
*To increase runner participation, new and returning.
*To provide for a safe race.
*To introduce new ideas to energize the race.
*To have local elite runners return.
*To have the law firms to feel a sense of camaraderie for all employees in a law firm (lawyers, legal assistants, secretaries, administrators, etc.) and to really have a sense of being a part of something fun and healthy.

For complete race details, visit the official race Web site, www.runlhh.org or contact race director Lauren Frank by e-mail at lauren.frank@heart.org, or by phone at 703-914-3710.
