W.C. & A. N. Miller Calls for Entries in the Spring Valley/Sumner Community 5K Classic
Press Release from W.C. & A.N. Miller Companies
May 8, 2003
Washington, DC
For the Washington Running Report

The race is on for entries of all ages for the W.C. & A.N. Miller Companies 13th Annual Spring Valley/Sumner 5K Classic. The race, which raised close to $150,000 for the Children's National Medical Center's (CNMC) Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders last year, will benefit the hospital's division again this year. In honor of W.C. & A.N. Miller Companies' community service, CNMC will dedicate the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders in honor of former Miller Companies President and Chairman of the Board, Edward J. Miller.

"Since 1985, our company has proudly been affiliated with CNMC," said current W.C. & A.N Miller President and Chairman of the Board Edward J. Miller, Jr. "With the help of the community, the 5K is our way of giving back. For this reason, we hope to have even more entries this year making our donation to CNMC the largest ever."

The Spring Valley/Sumner 5K Classic will be held on Saturday, September 13, starting at 8:30 a.m. at The Shops at Sumner Place located at 4701 Sangamore Road in Bethesda. The course will wind through the streets of Sumner, where water stations will be in place along the route. The ChampionChip timing system will be used to score the race. The system uses a computer chip, which must be tied to a runner's shoe laces, to record the exact time the runner crosses the starting and finishing lines.

Entries for the 5K can be made by individuals or teams of four comprised of all men, women or both. In addition to the overall team award, the top three 5K finishers in the following age brackets will receive awards: 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70 and over. All race participants will receive a Spring Valley/Sumner Community 5K Classic T-shirt.

In the spirit of competition and community, this year's race will feature popular events from the past. In addition to the 5K, W.C. & A.N. Miller will continue to host a one-mile fun run for children and a fitness walk. Also adding to the day's activities is CNMC's Dr. Bear to take pictures with the children and hand out prizes.

The entry fee for the Spring Valley/Sumner 5K and fitness walk before September 6 is $18, $23 after and $25 the day of the event. The kids' sprint registration is $12. To register, visit http://5k.wcanmiller.com and receive $2 discount if you register online before July 19, or pick up a registration packet at The Sumner Room, 4701 Sangamore Road, Bethesda, MD.
