The 7th Annual Cassidy & Pinkard Race for Hope Brain Tumor Society 5K Run/Walk was special for many different reasons. The weather cooperated as more than 2,500 survivors, runners, walkers, teams, and sponsors took off down Pennsylvania Avenue. Many of the participants were on teams--nearly 150 teams comprised of emotionally-motivated friends and family ran or walked. More than 2,100 people were on teams honoring loved ones, past and present. Many walkers on teams stayed together throughout the event marching to a cadence and carrying banners. There was enormous satisfaction on the race committee for a year's worth of effort in hosting their most successful year in terms of participants and funds raised. Each $50,000 raised pays for another research grant and provides hope for the families of people afflicted with brain tumors. The event raised in excess of $600,000 from generous corporate sponsors and excited team members. Everyone played their part well and collectively shared the joy of success. That really contributed to so many smiles.

Fifty survivors participated this year, with Hunt Taylor from Chesapeake Beach, VA being the fastest in 21:39. Sari Henry from Washington, DC ran 26:21 to be the fastest female survivor.

The overall men's winner was Ronald Shaiko from Arlington, age 44, in a time of 16:43. Second place honors went to Jean-Christ Arcaz of Rockville, MD (43) with his time of 17:08. The U.S. Military Academy at West Point was proudly represented by Anthony Calingo's third place finish just 11 seconds back.

The overall women's winner, Eileen Kickish, ran 19:28 and lives in the District. At 20:16, some 48 seconds later, Arlington's Julia Jankot took second place. From Odenton, MD Gloria Santarpia raced into the finish in 20:21 for third place. Considering that the first two women were aged 24, Santarpia was impressive as the first female masters division finisher.

In the women's submasters division (35-39), Adina Wadsworth of the District of Columbia (photo left) ran 21:08 for first place. Helene Glick of Potomac, MD was second more than a minute back. In the men's submasters, Dave McGee of Bowie, MD ran 18:55 for first and Tyrone Cook of Dale City, VA took second, just seven seconds later.

After the 5K runners and walkers cleared the starting line, the little kids lined up for their fun run and took off down Pennsylvania Avenue. Hundreds turned out to claim a medal and run for the cause.

Certainly the enthusiasm and excitement won't end today. This event provides the energy to set higher goals for next year. Put May 1, 2005 on your calendar. Congratulations to everyone and thanks for all the smiles.
