A quietly awesome 10K that rocks Georgetown's Washington Harbour
each June. "The Little Guy" invites you, the family, friends
and co-workers to run, race, jog or volunteer at the 14th Annual
Lawyers Have Heart 10K and 3K Walk, Saturday, June 12, 2004
(8:00 AM). This is the roll call for the Washington legal
community to sign-up and be recognized and to settle the debate
over "Road Justice." The opening arguments will be at the start
line and each firm will have 6.2 miles to present their best
showing. It's not the opening argument which will decide the
case but how it's closed at the finish line and the time on the
clock. Who is going down? This year's presenting sponsor is UPS. Proceeds from the race
benefit the American Heart Association. Since the inaugural race
in 1991, $2.8 million has been raised. The mission is to reduce
disability and death from cardiovascular disease (CVD) and
stroke. By participating, you will not only strengthen your own
heart through exercise, you will also help to raise funds vital
to the educational programs and research of the AHA. The registration fee through June 11, 2004,
is $32 and on race day the fee is $35.00. For children 12 and
under the fee is $10.00. In 1990 the Washingtonian magazine ran an article written
by the late lawyer/journalist John Sansing; it was about
lawyers, the
good, the bad, and the ugly. Attorney Rick Frank sprang into
action by proving "Lawyers Have Heart" and the first 10K was
organized on May 19, 1991, with 1,038 finishers. On June 12,
2004, the tradition
continues. The race is the main court room for all law firms and staff
members as all compete for a variety of awards and to return to
the
office with the top honors. There will be no motions for a
continuance as the race will go on rain or shine. If you can't
attend, send your second chair. The "Little Guy" wants to know,
who is the fastest lawyer in Washington? Last year it was
George Torgun (34:23) and Heather Lamberg-Kafel (43:13). Running in the event makes you feel special because your support
helps to reach many people in the community through the programs
of the American Heart Association. There are special thanks
extended to the Georgetown Advisory Neighborhood Commission for
supporting the request for the 10K route. The race would not be
possible without their partnership and the following
communities, along Foxhall Road, MacArthur Boulevard, Q Street,
44th Street, Volta Place, Greene Place, Clark Place, Potomac
Avenue, Lavarock, and Lingan.
The newly designed course will be devoid of the Georgetown
hills. The start and finish is located at 30th and K Streets
(under the Whitehurst Freeway, North side). The course (out and
back) goes towards 27th Street for a left hairpin turn onto the
Whitehurst Freeway. The route continues to M Street (1 Mile, out
and back along North side), passes the entrance to Georgetown
University and makes a left turn onto Canal Road. The 2 mile
mark will be right after Clark Street and the 3 mile mark will
be right before Reservoir Road. The four mile mark is located before Clark Street. There will be
two lanes running out and running back with the runners staying
to the right. The water stop will be in center of the roadway
after the 2 and 4 mile marks. The 5 mile mark (along M Street)
will be after the entrance to Georgetown. The course will go
back onto the Whitehurst Freeway and continue to 27th Street for
a left hairpin turn onto K Street for a dramatic fast finish. In the excitement over this course, miles 1 to 5 will be all out
running on a flat surface. You go as fast as your legs will
carry you and after the turn around you can see who is front of
you and who is behind you. There will be no hiding on this
course. The "Little Guy" wants everyone to get ready for some action as
the event records will go down. Three of the event records
were set on the hilly course--Open: Jerry Lawson 30:18 (1994),
Charlotte Thomas 34:42 (1992), Master: Donna Moore 37:17 (2001).
The male master record was set by lawyer Jim Hage in 2002
(32:56). Hage was the overall winner in 1993 (31:56) and 1996
(32:06). There will be awards for small law firms (under 50) and large
(50 and over, government, corporations) along with awards for
others in the legal profession. The top runners (open male and
female) will be going after a pair of airline tickets offered by
JetBlue. The top masters will receive a one-year membership to
the Sports Club/LA. The second place male will receive a weekend stay for two in a
Fabulous Carriage Suite at the Latham Hotel (Georgetown). The
female will receive a weekend stay for two in a Terrace Hotel
with dinner in 15ria Restaurant. The awards list also includes gift certificates from
long-standing partner Fleet Feet of Adams Morgan. The Lawyers Have Heart 10K is the legal community's 10K of
choice. The tradition will continue with all of the support of
those who run the 10K or walk in the 3K. There is something for
the entire office and family. Rally the teams in the office! Full race details and on-line registration is available at
http://www.runlhh.org or call (703) 914-3710.
The American Heart Association (AHA) was founded in 1924. The
AHA is the largest voluntary health organization and the largest
non-government funding source for cardiovascular disease and
stroke, which eventually kills nearly one million Americans.
