Annapolis Ten Mile Run

30th Anniversary set for August 27, 2005
By Ron Bowman of the Annapolis Striders
May 27, 2005
Annapolis, MD
For the Washington Running Report

For past participants in the Annapolis Ten Mile Run, you are getting a heads-ups that registration for this years 30th Anniversary will open on Wednesday, 1 June. City Officials limit the number of runners we can have on city streets so we must limit the number of entrants to 5,000. Historically, this race closes out in about three weeks. So, CIRCLE 1 JUNE ON YOUR CALENDAR NOW to get your entry in.

A few changes for this year you will need to be aware of:

The Entry Fee will be $40

Parking will still be a challenge for everyone so consider staying at one of the fine hotels or bed-and-breakfast Inns so you can get to the Expo/Packet Pick Up on Saturday 27 August or plan on an EARLY (6:30 am would be good) arrival on Sunday.

In commemoration of the 30th Anniversary, we will be giving everyone who comes to Packet Pick Up on Saturday, 27 August or on Race morning, a high quality runner's vest. (See Note below). You can see the vest, and the sizing on our web site. THERE WILL BE NO SIZE CHANGES AT THE EXPO OR ON RACE DAY.

In keeping with our tradition of acknowledging your accomplishment of finishing this difficult race, we will also be giving ALL FINISHERS a replica of the sailboat awarded to the Overall Winners. Both items can be viewed from the race web site

This year the START and FINISH will be co-located on the West side of the stadium. This is the opposite side the Start has traditionally been. The EXPO will still be at the North end of the stadium where it has been the last two years. After finishing the race, you will be able to remove your chip, get some refreshment, and proceed directly to the Expo - and the BEER! No long walk up the stadium and NO STAIRS!

The 12-Minute pace rule will be STRICTLY ENFORCED. Our agreement with the City and County Police require us to open the streets to traffic as soon as possible. Maintaining at least a 12- minute pace rule is the only way we can do that. There will be a clearly identified PACER maintaining a 12 Minute pace so you can judge how you are doing, if you are close to the cut-off. Volunteers will be making announcements as the cut-off time approaches and buses, with water, will be available near the 8- Mile mark to transport runners not making the cut-off back to the stadium. Runners opting to continue past the official cut- off will be disqualified and asked to remove their computer timing chip, to move to the sidewalk, and proceed at their own risk as pedestrians. The police will start opening roads and intersections to traffic at that time.

Note: After many years of post race premium distribution at the A-10, this year the Striders are planning on a pre-race distribution to all entrants of the 2005 race of a high quality runner's vest. This item is in keeping with the Race's tradition of offering one of the best premiums of any race. There will also be an additional post-race item for all finishers. Over the years, the increased size of the race and the need for the Race management to be responsive to the issues of closing and clearing the course in a timely fashion, while providing a quality experience for all participants, the Race management is considering moving attention away from the finisher's premium towards a premium for all entrants for future races. The finisher's award would receive less emphasis. This would allow, among other considerations, the possibility that runners who for whatever reason do not believe they will finish within the Race's traditional cut-off of 2 hours (now adjusted for the chip system) to avoid being disqualified while trying to finish for a Finishers premium. There are many considerations, which will be part of this decision. Therefore, the race management is interested in the opinions of you, the runners, and has added a question on the race application to gather your input.
