Plaza America Family 5K
Bring the Family
By Jim Hage May 15, 2005 Reston, VA For the Washington Running Report
Granted, it's right there in the name, but the Plaza America
Family 5K casts a wide net. The fourth edition of this event
puts a premium on moms, dads, kids and American flags, all in
that quintessence of suburbia, Reston. And if post-race smiles
from the 5K, the kids run and the ample victuals spread are a
fair gauge, a good time was had by all. And not in the least by the race winners, Reuben Chebii, from
Kenya, and Tatiana Belovol, from Ukraine (photo left), who each
earned $500 for their efforts. Chebii (22) who lives and trains
in West Chester, PA, bested his countryman and training
partner, David Korir (23) by just three seconds to win in 14
minutes 39 seconds. Both were under the previous course record
set by Andre Williams in 2002. Belovol (35), who also trains in
West Chester, ran 17:51 to outdistance Vanessa Hunter, from
Arlington, by 33 seconds.
Runner-up Korir won the Pike's Peek 10K just three weeks earlier
in 29:24, but the rolling hills of Reston took their toll on
him. "I had not enough energy to push on the last hill because I
already pushed all the other hills," Korir said. "Reuben was too
strong at the end." Chebii (#3, photo left) who was outkicked and finished
second at the Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run on April 3, helped
Korir (#11) force the pace through the opening two miles of 4:43
and 4:42. That was fast enough to gap Alexey Khokhlov from
Russia and Mohammed Ar-Ar from Morocco, another of the West
Chester gang.
"The Kenyans, they have it here, here, and here," Ar-Ar said,
indicating his head, legs and heart. "They are always
competitive." Ar-Ar, hardly a slacker himself, finished second a
day earlier at the Kennett Square (PA) 5K in 14:59 before
running 15:13 and finishing fourth in Reston. Khokhlov, who ran 15:00 to take third, is perhaps the area's
most prolific racer (photo left). During April he was 18th at
Cherry Blossom, fourth at the Sallie Mae 10K, second at Pike's
Peek and then ran 2:20:02 at the Derby Festival Marathon in
Louisville. Khokhlov is already gearing up for another, the
Green Bay Marathon on May 22.
Barb Fallon-Wallace (31) from Alexandria, VA (photo left) was a
last-minute entry and finished third in 19:05. But despite her
fine finish, Fallon-Wallace admitted that her "heart wasn't in
it today." Earlier in the morning, her husband Dan, a top area
runner, left on the initial leg of his deployment for an 18-
month tour of duty in Iraq. Wallace is in the Army Reserves. "Dan said I should come here and run," Fallon-Wallace said. "I'm
not in great shape but it was a good distraction."

New course records set
Photo left: Connie Pullella (#124) of Leesburg, VA and Brian
Gillooly (#757) of Clifton, VA charge to the finish.
Editor's note: We heard the course was muggy and windy, and
windy and rolling. Still, many course records were set aside.
Race winner Reuben Chebii's 14:39 erased Andre Williams's fine
time of 14:45 set in the inaugural year. Women's winner Tatiana
Belovol (35) is nearly as old as the combined ages of the last
two women winners, Tatyana Petrova (20) in 2004, Atalelech
Ketema (19) in 2003. She ran 17:51 to dismiss another inaugural
course record set by Pasty Long in 2002. Jenny Rexrode (50) bumped Alice Franks (22:38 - '03) off the 50-
54 age group platform with 22:05. No matter; Alice (55) has
moved on. Barely slowing down, she moved down Heidi Pirie
(24:01 - '03) with a swift 22:47. In the sixties, top ranked Patrick Griffith (60) raced 19:01 to
change the record set by John Elliott (19:50 - '02). Dee Nelson
(61) helped herself to Mary Ann O'Connor's record of 26:22 set
last year with 25:34. Erika Marin blew away the Best of 2005
time (27:43) and last year's record holder E.C.Williams (27:55)
with a super fast 27:12. Nobody can fault Stephen Smith's attempt to defend his Reston
Resident title of 16:57 set in 2003. Last year he won the award
with a sixth place overall 17:22. This year, at age thirty-five,
he ran a swift 16:59. This year it was not enough. Young William
Berriel (23) set the new Resident record with 16:19, while
finishing eighth overall.
