Washington Running Report

First Stop on the Washington Running Report
Ten-Mile Triple

By George Banker

For the Washington Running Report

The excitement has started for four local runners. Each has the potential of cashing in on the $2,000 prize offered by the Washington Running Report Ten Mile Triple for any local runner who wins his/her division in all three ten-mile races.

The 33rd Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run was held on Sunday, April 3, 2005. The best local area runners lined up against a field of international runners.

The first local female and first American was Susannah Kvasnicka of Great Falls, VA, of the Potomac River Running team, with a time of 57:27, in 9th place.

The first local female in the masters division was Monica Grillo of Arlington, VA, running 1:04:27 for 31st place overall and 4th master.

The first local and first American was Michael Wardian of Arlington, VA, with a time of 52:00, 21st overall, running for Team Pacers/Brooks. The Washingtonian magazine in 2002 referred to him as the "Tough Guy." Wardian set the world record for a marathon on the treadmill last December in 2:23:58.

The first local male in the masters division was Jim Hage of Kensington, MD, finishing in 55:27, 2nd master, 1st in the 45- 49 division, and 35th overall.

The two remaining races in the Washington Running Report Ten Mile Triple are listed below. Join the excitement and see whether the streak will continue in the second round.

30th Annapolis 10-Mile Run, Sunday, August 28, 2005 - Registration Opens June 1st; Navy-Marine Corps Stadium, Annapolis, MD. Web site: www.annapolisstriders.org. The race setting is in historic Annapolis, Maryland only minutes from the U.S. Naval Academy. Typical August weather prevails: heat and humidity. Residents along the course bring out garden hoses to cool off the runners. The race travels via Main Street toward the harbor. There is a spectacular view of the Naval Academy from atop the Severn River Bridge. One great perk is the premium given each year to the finishers. There may not be many PRs but it's an excellent race with good competition. New for 2005: race number transfers.

21st Army Ten-Miler, Sunday, October 2, 2005 REGISTRATION IS OPEN Pentagon, Washington, DC. Web site: www.armytenmiler.com. A "Tradition of Excellence" marks this race. The race starts and finishes at the Pentagon. The course travels across Memorial Bridge into Washington, DC and travels past several of the national monuments. The racecourse is flat and fast and it is the largest 10-mile race in the country and the second largest in the world. Soldiers come from around the world to compete for the prestigious Commander's Cup. In addition, armies from around the world compete for the International Trophy. New for 2005: race number transfers.
