For the Washington Running Report

Not running the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) but want to be in on the action? Support the MCM as a volunteer during the 2006 race weekend from October 27-29 and be the first to receive a guaranteed, non-complimentary entry into the 2007 marathon, as well as a volunteer shirt.

"The MCM would not be possible without the support of great volunteers," said Rick Nealis, MCM Race Director. "Our volunteers help the running community in all areas of race day. Plus, it is a great experience to get in the trenches with the Marines."

Volunteers are needed to help to support a variety of activities throughout MCM weekend. Shifts are available for the MCM Health and Fitness Expo on Friday, October 27 and Saturday, October 28 at the DC Armory, as well as for marathon day, Sunday, October 29. Volunteers are needed to support water points, the hospitality area, baggage, medical stations, the information booth and more. Both individuals and groups are welcome and encouraged.

Register volunteer by October 5 at www.marinemarathon.com. Follow the instructions for the online module and be sure to mark your location preference. All volunteers signing up via online volunteer registration will receive e-mail updates. Shirts will be provided when volunteers check-in at their race weekend assignment locations. An application to the 2007 MCM along with the volunteer participation certificate will be mailed in December 2006.

Voted "Best Marathon for Families" by HerSports Magazine, the Marine Corps Marathon continues a combined tradition of dedication, sportsmanship and patriotism. Since its inception, over 300,000 civilian and military runners from all walks of life have participated, deservingly earning the event its nickname "The People's Marathon." The 31 st Marine Corps Marathon will be held on October 29, 2006. Visit www.marinemarathon.com for more information.
