Top Finishers at Capitol Hill Prepare for Grandma's Marathon

Four miles into the 28th Capitol Hill Classic 10K, race leaders and training partners Nick Gramsky and Edmund Burke had a little heart to heart.

"You take it," Gramsky told Burke. "I'm done."

"No," Burke said. "You got it."

Burke (in photo) proved correct, and Gramsky (29), from Vienna, VA opened a slight lead over the final two miles and won in 31 minutes 4 seconds. Burke (37) from Burtonsville, MD finished second in 31:14, 10 seconds back. Both men, along with third-place finisher Matt Barresi (24), train with the American University-based group and will head to Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, MN next month and attempt to qualify for the Olympic trials marathon.

Women's winner Katie Nowak (26, photo)--who is also running Grandma's--broke away from early leader Victoria Lynch (33) near five miles and just before the course's gut-check climb up Capitol Hill.

"I went out faster than I should have," said Nowak, who was caught and passed by Lynch two miles into the race. But Nowak did not panic, and she stalked Lynch for three miles before making her winning move. She finished in 37:46, four seconds ahead of Lynch. Martha Merz (44) was the top master and third overall in 38:02.

"I was tired and didn't think I was going to hold on," said Lynch, from Washington, DC, long one of the area's top road racers but largely absent the past couple of years. "It's okay though, I'm having fun with it. I had forgotten racing could be fun."

Nowak, an exercise physiologist who competed intercollegiately at Ball State and now lives in Rockville, MD, finished second in 38:18 at the Battle of the Boulevard 10K in Arlington, VA one week earlier and ran 2:54:26 at the Boston Marathon in April. She will attempt to meet the women's Olympic trials marathon standard of 2:47:00 at Grandma's.

Setsu Rosen (66) from Washington, DC was the most senior women's competitor and Dick Coogan (75) from McLean, VA held that honor among the men.

The 10K is the featured event, but many compete in the 3K and kids run. More than 2,150 ran the 10K, which traverses the historic Capitol Hill neighborhood, rendered poignant this year in the wake of the devastating fire at Eastern Market on April 30 near the three-mile mark.

Poignant, too, may be the last rites for one of the area's great neighborhood courses. For 28 years, the charge down and then up Capitol Hill in the final mile has presented the 10K's signature challenge. But the course may be changed next year according to the race director due to security issues; one cannot be too careful when thousands of men and women in short pants troop around the nation's legislative brain center early on a Sunday morning.

And so it goes.

Photo below: One of the area's top racing couples, Malcolm Lester (39) and Hilary Cairns (36) got a babysitter and raced in together today in 38:50. Cairns was the sixth woman finisher.
