CBS News anchorwoman Katie Couric will take part in W*USA 9 NEWS NOW's live coverage of this year's Susan G. Komen National Race for the Cure to be held Saturday, June 2nd on the National Mall in Washington, DC, the station announced today. In addition to appearing with W*USA 9 anchors Andrea Roane and Mike Walter during the Gannett-owned D.C. station's Komen National Race live coverage that morning, she will also serve as an emcee and kick-off the 5K race, providing a motivational boost to the expected 50,000-plus runners participants who will be at the starting line.

"Katie Couric is a wonderful inspiration to cancer survivors and we are very honored to have her participate in this year's Race," said breast cancer survivor Hala Moddelmog, president and CEO of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. "Breast cancer is a disease we can beat - and we are glad that Katie Couric is helping to lead the charge on Race day."

Ms. Couric will also anchor the "CBS Evening News" live from Washington the night before the Race. The broadcast will feature several stories specific to Washington, DC area issues. "We are very excited to have Katie join us as an integral part of our Komen National Race for the Cure coverage this year," said W* USA's President and General Manager Allan Horlick. "She is not only one of the nation's top journalists, and a member of our CBS family, but a passionate woman who cares deeply about causes like this, and can truly help raise awareness for Komen For The Cure and breast cancer research simply with her involvement." Ms. Couric hails from the Washington area, having grown up in Arlington, VA. She worked for one of DC's network affiliates from 1987 to 1989. She anchored the "Today Show" on NBC for 15 years before joining the "CBS Evening News" as anchor and managing editor last year. Ms. Couric received the George Foster Peabody Award for her March 2000 series on colon cancer. She also has won six Emmy Awards, the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi Award, a National Headliner Award, an Associated Press Award, a Matrix Award, two American Women in Radio and Television Gracie Awards, the Harvard University School of Public Health's Julius B. Richmond Award, and UNICEF's Danny Kaye Humanitarian Award.

About Susan G. Komen for the Cure
Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all, and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure, we have invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.

The 2007 Komen National Race for the Cure is a 5K event held on the National Mall in Washington, DC on Saturday, June 2nd. More than 50,000 participants from across the country are expected to participate, including 3,000 breast cancer survivors. The Komen National Race last year raised a total of $3.3 million and granted a record $2.6 million to local breast health and breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs for the medically underserved in Washington, DC, Virginia, and Maryland.
